Once upon a time, there was young Jamaican American girl from Manhattan who traveled all the way to University Park, Pennsylvania to meet the love of her life (a native Hollis, Queens resident). Where does the story go from here? Currently, the book is still being written. For the thirteen plus years shared together they have each accomplished quite a bit for a couple in their thirties.

A licensed attorney by trade, Natasha held various stints in the corporate world prior to making a foray into fashion and writing. Having been a victim of bullying as a child growing up, Natasha learned to seek out fashion as a source of strength early on and actively uses it as a personal means of empowerment; because of her own experiences with bullying and her strong desire to help others within the plus size community, Natasha started Dressing Room 8 to provide a web-based resource where women can gain personal and professional empowerment through her fashion and lifestyle focused blog, consultation and coaching services. Dressing Room 8 helps women how to think with clarity, dress with confidence, and live with purpose.

Kahlil Nurse is an Electrical Engineer who wears many different hats (just like his wife). He is the Tech Guru for too many people to mention (which his friends and family can totally attest to). He has been the technical support for Dressing Room 8 and Sistas On Fire. As a fan of cars, technology and finance, he embraces opportunities to learn, grow, and enjoy his hobbies to the fullest.

In September 2017, they decided to share their marriage and thoughts to media with their exciting new podcast WokeNFree where they talk about relationships, education, religion, politics, music, history, fashion, diversity in the media, entertainment, empowerment matters, life hacks, technology, cultural disparities in the world, and everything in between. You can listen to a new WokeNFree episode every Wednesday for #WokeNFreeWednesday.

Recently, Kahlil and Natasha were on our show talking about WokeNFree podcast.

During our conversation, they talked about:

– Their thoughts about the Black Panther movie
– Some of Natasha’s and Kahlil’s story including how they met
– The values that their parents instilled in them when they were growing up
– How did the WokeNFree podcast start and the work it takes to make a WokeNFree episode happen
– Some show highlights, some topics that are coming up on the show and some dream guests that they would like to have on the show
– Their message for Blacks who would like to become content creators
– Words of wisdom for Black couples who would like to work together

Aisha K. Staggers has been writing since middle school. She had her first major publication in her local newspaper’s entertainment section while a sophomore in high school, a publication in another state paper followed. Aisha has been contributing to various paper, magazines and textbooks for over 15 years.

In addition to her time as an instructor of social sciences in higher education, Aisha has served as a director of education and policy research centers, and on the staff of legislative commissions. Aisha previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats Women’s Caucus and has remained active in politics and public policy. She is an alumni of Albertus Magnus College and Fisk University where she earned Bachelor’s in Communications and Master’s Degree in Psychology, respectively, and completed the Education Policy Fellowship Program in 2008.

Currently, Aisha is Senior Editor for BookTrib, a division of the literary public relations firm, Meryl Moss Media and a HuffPost contributor. In addition to her own work, Aisha has written liner notes for a Prince tribute album, I Wish U Heaven released December 25 and available on YouTube. In 2018, she will be contributing to scholarly work on Prince and the Minneapolis Sound and sitting on an NYU panel for a conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of his Lovesexy album.

While Aisha enjoys writing about music, she feels the most critical discussions we can have today are centered around race and intersectionality because “you can’t fix a problem you don’t acknowledge, and not acknowledging the plight of women of color and specifically Black women is a problem.”
