David A. Love is a journalist and commentator who writes investigative stories and op-eds on a variety of issues, including politics, social justice, human rights, race, criminal justice and inequality. He is a writer for theGrio, CNN, Atlanta Black Star, Al Jazeera, NewsWorks, The Progressive and BlackCommentator.com. Love is also an adjunct instructor at the Rutgers School of Communication and Information, where he trains students in a social justice journalism lab, and edits and publishes student work for the online publication NJ Spark. In addition to his journalism career, Love has worked as an advocate and leader in the nonprofit sector, served as a legislative aide, and as a law clerk to two federal judges. He holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard University, and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He also completed the Joint Programme in International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford. How does one learn to be a good father? Why does fatherhood seem to be at odds with the image of Black masculinity? Pops explores and reveals answers to these and other questions concerning parenting. In early 2015, Garland McLaurin found out that he was going to be a father. Three months into the pregnancy, his partner miscarried. he immediately realized he was totally unprepared. Scared about His abilities to be a good parent, Garland began to contemplate what fatherhood looked like for Black men. He thought about friends and the general narrative surrounding Black fathers. The goal of Pops is to contribute to the national conversation around fatherhood from the viewpoint of Black fathers. In light of recent societal events and conversations concerning African American men, Garland wants his project to inform and inspire a broader online media audience using entertaining and engaging storytelling. Garland has become a father and at the same time he is am faced with the possibility of losing my own father. The many questions around fatherhood that led me to tell this story still exists, but with Pops he am able to look at the experiences of these fathers and navigate my own parental journey. POPS is a web series about three African American men facing the toughest challenge of their lives, becoming good fathers. The universal themes of responsibility, nurturing, Garland McLaurin is a Peabody-Award winning filmmaker; his love for storytelling comes from its power to artistically explore the complex and conflicting social and psychological layers of He co-directed/produced the Peabody winning documentary series, 180 Days A Year Inside An American High School and Hartsville that aired on PBS. He served as co-cinematographer on Wes Moore’s Coming Back documentary series, highlighting veterans, and for award-winning documentary filmmaker Yoruba Richen’s The New Black, which explores the fight for marriage equality in the African American community. His other professional credits include: field producing on CNN’s Black in America 4, producer/shooter for WAMU 88.5 American University, BET’s special Homecoming: The Killing of DJ Henry. Additional past digital media work includes work for Black Public Media, Time.com, NY Times video division and video editing at the National Geographic digital news division. He holds a BA in Radio-TV-Film from Howard University and an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts graduate film school. Steven Kiges (pron. Key-jez) is the co-founder and director of The Coach Training Academy. The Coach Training Academy is a professional, International Coach Federation accredited coach training school. Graduates have gone on to both build very successful solo coaching practices as well as taking their coaching skills to corporate positions including Microsoft, Google, and NASA, just to name a few. Steve is a is an experienced Master coach with over 5000 coaching hours and over 10,000 hours mentoring people that want to become exceptional coaches or as he puts it “artistic agents of change”. To the coaching world, he brings both his own past struggles of growing up in a very dysfunction home, depressed, suicidal and at one point topping the scales at over 410 pounds. Professionally his first career was as a professional musician having attended The Juilliard School, playing various orchestras and as a university lecturer. After leaving music he then went on to build one of the largest Dental Software companies in North America and after selling that, followed his life’s passion of helping others. Dedicating himself to his core philosophy that “no one breezes through life…we all have our unique struggles. With the right support and environment, everyone can live life with purpose and passion often exceeding what they think is possible for themselves. His life is a testament of that philosophy. To coaching, and coach training Steven brings a full background in neurosciences including; crisis counseling, emotional intelligence, Time Line Specialist, Master of Communication and a trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. THE DR. VIBE SHOW - DR. JONATHAN P. HIGGINS - FIXING THE LIVES OF MALE CHILDHOOD-RAPE SURVIVORS - OCTOBER 21 - 2017
Dr. Jonathan P. Higgins is a speaker, educator and thought leader. With over ten years of experience in education, social justice and grassroots movements, Dr. Higgins is focused on public speaking and working with the media on issues centered on people of color, LGBTQ storytelling and marginalized communities. His work has been included on Blavity, The Root, Efniks, Wear Your Voice and Talkspace. Dr. Higgins serves as Campus Pride’s Curriculum Educator, is a Lambda Literary writing fellow and a regular contributor to SOULE. Dr. Higgins is committed to using his voice to highlight and bring focus to the issues that affect both the Black and LGBTQ community. In September of 2016, Dr. Higgins launched a YouTube channel where he posts weekly videos about race and identity issues, and began sharing pieces of his a mini-documentary highlighting stories related to his life as a queer Black man growing up in the inner city of San Bernardino. This mini-documentary also covers his journey to receiving his doctoral degree. Dr. Higgins has spoken at universities including Kansas State, Colgate University, UCSD, and UCLA. He has consulted with Purdue University to restructure their Safe Zone program and has given several presentations within the California State University system about what can be done to better serve LGBTQ+ students. Dr. Higgins continues to lecture all over the country on topics related to intersectionality, race, gender and sexuality and has gained attention from websites including Attn: and Vox. In April of 2017, Dr. Higgins gave his first TEDx talk on how to unlearn fear and develop personal power, leading to an op-ed piece on Splinter.com. Dr. Higgins was born in Los Angeles, California and graduated from California State University, San Bernardino with a Bachelors of Arts in Communication Studies and a minor in Women’s Studies. He also holds a Masters of Arts in Management from the University of Redlands, where he graduate top three in his class and was inducted into the Whitehead Leadership Society. Dr. Higgins recently completed his Educational Doctorate of Leadership in Justice from the University of Redlands where he wrote his dissertation on the first year experiences of queer men of color in higher education.
