Jumoke (pronounced Joo-MOH-keh) is a Nigerian word which means "Everyone Loves The Child. "Camp Jumoke was founded in 1994 by The Association for the Advancement of Blacks in Health Sciences (AABHS) and is dedicated to enriching the lives of children who have Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). In its first year of operation, 40 children attended the camp for two weeks. The continuing mandate of the Camp Jumoke Organization is to better serve the needs of hundreds of children across Canada afflicted with Sickle Cell Disease. Your contributions help send kids to a camp where they can participate in outdoor activities, develop lifelong memories and relationships, enhance their self-esteem, create support networks and so much more.In this episode, we talk and share with Yvonne Clarke, Events Director for Camp Jumoke. She talks a little about herself and a lot about Camp Jumoke. Each year since its inception in 1994, Camp Jumoke has held a walk-a-thon to raise the necessary funds to send children with Sickle Cell Disease to summer camp. Camp Jumoke receives no government funding. Therefore, it is primarily supported by private and corporate donations. The annual Camp Jumoke walk-a-thon is an entire day of family-oriented events featuring celebrities, live entertainment, children's activities, vendors, refreshments and free giveaways. Thanks to the City of Toronto, we are able to hold all of these festivities in the park behind the provincial legislative building. The Camp Jumoke walk-a-thon is a lively procession through the streets of downtown Toronto and attracts participants from the Greater Toronto Area, surrounding areas and across North America .At last year's walk-a-thon, thousands of dollars were raised by more than 1,500 individual donations and corporate sponsorships. This allowed 36 children to attend the two week camp session and develop a life time of memories.Date: Saturday May 29th, 2010 - Rain or Shine!Time: 10 a.m.Location: Queens Park- Toronto (North Entrance Near Museum Subway Station On the North-South University Subway Line)Web information: http://www.jumoke.org/walk.aspIf you would like to find out more about Camp Jumoke contact:Address: 1457 Dundas St. W., Suite 203Toronto, OntarioCanada M6J 1Y7Phone: (416) 410-2995Fax: Fax: (416) 920-2064Email: info@jumoke.orgWeb: http://www.jumoke.org/about-jumoke.aspPlease feel free to email us at info@blackcanadianman.comGod bless, peace be well and keep the faith,Vibe and Vegasinfo@blackcanadianman.comhttp://thevibeandvegasshow.wordpress.com/
