Leroy C. Mckenzie Jr. is a native Baltimorean and a product of the Baltimore Public and Private school systems. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He is a proud member of the New Psalmist Baptist Church; where he serves on several ministries. He is the President/CEO of JNF Enterprises, which is a Distribution, Publishing, and Business Consulting Firm located in Baltimore, Maryland. He is also a contributing writer for the Real Life Real Faith…Men of Faith Magazine, The Tubman City News Online Paperand the IndieMogul Magazine.

Mr. Mckenzie has written two books of poetry, which have been featured on Heaven 600’s poetry café, a business finance book, The Customer Is Not Always Right, A Common Sense Guide To Establishing A Strong and Flourishing Business, a book on entrepreneurship, Young & Gifted, The New Generation of Entrepreneurship, and a book on Leadership, The Art of Leadership, Success Strategies for the 21st Century Leader. He has performed his poetry and spoken at churches, and various other venues throughout the country. JNF Enterprises, was started in 2004, with the publishing of Mr. Mckenzie’s debut books of Poetry The Inner Soul Volumes 1&2, and the launching of their Christian Apparel line Try3Jesus™. Carol Bluestein lives in Slingerlands, NY and is the author, C.L. Coach Michael Taylor is an entrepreneur, author, motivational speaker, and radio show host who has dedicated his life to empowering men and women to reach their full potential. He knows first-hand how to overcome adversity and build a rewarding and fulfilling life and he is sharing his knowledge and wisdom with others to support them in creating the life of their dreams.

He is no stranger to adversity and challenges. He was born in the inner-city projects of Corpus Christi Texas to a single with six children. Although he dropped out of high school in the 11th grade, his commitment to living an extraordinary life supported him in defying the odds.

Bankrupt and alone, he committed to rebuilding his life which propelled him to begin a 20-year inner journey of personal transformation which resulted in him discovering his true self and his passions for living. As a result, he is now happily married (14 years) and living his dream of living an extraordinary life while being in service to others. Through his books, lectures, and radio program, he now coaches others on how to become genuinely happy with their lives and live the lives they were born to live.

David A. Love is a journalist and commentator who writes investigative stories and op-eds on a variety of issues, including politics, social justice, human rights, race, criminal justice and inequality. He is a writer for theGrio, CNN, Atlanta Black Star, Al Jazeera, NewsWorks, The Progressive and BlackCommentator.com.

Love is also an adjunct instructor at the Rutgers School of Communication and Information, where he trains students in a social justice journalism lab, and edits and publishes student work for the online publication NJ Spark.

In addition to his journalism career, Love has worked as an advocate and leader in the nonprofit sector, served as a legislative aide, and as a law clerk to two federal judges. He holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard University, and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. How does one learn to be a good father? Why does fatherhood seem to be at odds with the image of Black masculinity? Pops explores and reveals answers to these and other questions concerning parenting.

In early 2015, Garland McLaurin found out that he was going to be a father. Three months into the pregnancy, his partner miscarried. he immediately realized he was totally unprepared. Scared about His abilities to be a good parent, Garland began to contemplate what fatherhood looked like for Black men. He thought about friends and the general narrative surrounding Black fathers.

The goal of Pops is to contribute to the national conversation around fatherhood from the viewpoint of Black fathers. In light of recent societal events and conversations concerning African American men, Garland wants his project to inform and inspire a broader online media audience using entertaining and engaging storytelling.

Garland has become a father and at the same time he is am faced with the possibility of losing my own father. The many questions around fatherhood that led me to tell this story still exists, but with Pops he am able to look at the experiences of these fathers and navigate my own parental journey.

POPS is a web series about three African American men facing the toughest challenge of their lives, becoming good fathers. The universal themes of responsibility, nurturing,
and love are individually explored by these fathers. They differ in personalities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and struggles, but share the collective experience of fatherhood. Their stories serve to reflect the reality of black fathers in America, a role rarely portrayed in the media.

Garland McLaurin is a Peabody-Award winning filmmaker; his love for storytelling comes from its power to artistically explore the complex and conflicting social and psychological layers of
people and society. His current project POPS, is a web-series exploring fatherhood for African American men funded by ITVS Digital and National Black Programming Consortium.

He co-directed/produced the Peabody winning documentary series, 180 Days A Year Inside An American High School and Hartsville that aired on PBS. He served as co-cinematographer on Wes Moore’s Coming Back documentary series, highlighting veterans, and for award-winning documentary filmmaker Yoruba Richen’s The New Black, which explores the fight for marriage equality in the African American community. His other professional credits include: field producing on CNN’s Black in America 4, producer/shooter for WAMU 88.5 American University, BET’s special Homecoming: The Killing of DJ Henry. Additional past digital media work includes work for Black Public Media, Time.com, NY Times video division and video editing at the National Geographic digital news division.

He holds a BA in Radio-TV-Film from Howard University and an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts graduate film school.

Steven Kiges (pron. Key-jez) is the co-founder and director of The Coach Training Academy. The Coach Training Academy is a professional, International Coach Federation accredited coach training school. After leaving music he then went on to build one of the largest Dental Software companies in North America and after selling that, followed his life’s passion of helping others. Dr. Jonathan P. Higgins is a speaker, educator and thought leader.

With over ten years of experience in education, social justice and grassroots movements, Dr. Higgins is focused on public speaking and working with the media on issues centered on people of color, LGBTQ storytelling and marginalized communities. His work has been included on Blavity, The Root, Efniks, Wear Your Voice and Talkspace. Dr. Higgins serves as Campus Pride’s Curriculum Educator, is a Lambda Literary writing fellow and a regular contributor to SOULE.

Dr. Higgins is committed to using his voice to highlight and bring focus to the issues that affect both the Black and LGBTQ community. In September of 2016, Dr. Higgins launched a YouTube channel where he posts weekly videos about race and identity issues, and began sharing pieces of his a mini-documentary highlighting stories related to his life as a queer Black man growing up in the inner city of San Bernardino. This mini-documentary also covers his journey to receiving his doctoral degree.

Dr. Higgins has spoken at universities including Kansas State, Colgate University, UCSD, and UCLA. He has consulted with Purdue University to restructure their Safe Zone program and has given several presentations within the California State University system about what can be done to better serve LGBTQ+ students. Dr. Higgins continues to lecture all over the country on topics related to intersectionality, race, gender and sexuality and has gained attention from websites including Attn: and Vox. In April of 2017, Dr. Higgins gave his first TEDx talk on how to unlearn fear and develop personal power, leading to an op-ed piece on Splinter.com.

Dr. Higgins was born in Los Angeles, California and graduated from California State University, San Bernardino with a Bachelors of Arts in Communication Studies and a minor in Women’s Studies. He also holds a Masters of Arts in Management from the University of Redlands, where he graduate top three in his class and was inducted into the Whitehead Leadership Society.

Dr. Higgins recently completed his Educational Doctorate of Leadership in Justice from the University of Redlands where he wrote his dissertation on the first year experiences of queer men of color in higher education. Photography has always been an interest of Lawrence’s. As a kid, he used to take my parent’s camera and shoot any and everything. He loved it! My parents, not so much. He didn’t have a clue what he was doing and back in those days it was film.

After completing York University’s Business Administration program, Lawrence started my career in radio. Not on-air though, but in sales. Families in Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario will no longer struggle to find a funeral home they can trust to give their loved ones the farewell they deserve. This November, New Haven Funeral Centre Inc. — Peel Region’s first Christian black-owned funeral centre opens its doors to the public. The two-day grand opening event will take place on November 11th from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., and November 12th from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The 30,000 sq. ft. contemporary-elegant boutique style facility, features four visitation suites, reception facilities, and a majestic chapel. New Haven’s aim is to create a heartfelt and positive experience for families who turn to them in their time of need or when planning in advance.

Founders, Dr. Lennox Walker and industry veteran Shelley Challenger, shared a vision of a full-service funeral centre that would prioritize faith-based services for families of all denominations. “It is our mission to bring God back to funeral services by providing a new standard of ministry for the Christian faith communities,” Challenger has said.

New Haven’s team includes licensed funeral directors with over 40 years of experience, as well as, on-site chaplains who will minister beyond funeral services by offering Christian grief counseling, last rites, mediation services, prayers requests, and pastoral support. The centre also offers funeral receptions,cultural gatherings, concierge services, health/wellness/real estate seminars, and anti-violence workshops. In addition, the centre will provide a first-class approach to estate and insurance planning to the community. New Haven is driven by a strong leadership and executive team, including Chairman Donovan McLean, and Managing Director, Shari Yearwood, both of whom are integral to the facility’s operation.

New Haven’s first day of opening festivities on November 11th will include public tours, traditional Caribbean cuisine and door prizes for attendees. In recognition of Remembrance Day, poppies will be provided and a moment of silence will be observed.

On Sunday, November 12th, guests can again experience guided public tours and enter for a chance to win a trip for two to Jamaica. The grand opening ceremony will begin at 3 pm and will be led by the Honour Guard with several dignitaries expected to attend.

Brad Sanders is a comedian, actor and writer best known for the radio soap opera It’s Your World and the Clarence Update of CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, for which he has received two Daytime Emmy Award nominations as writer/performer in the category of New Approaches in Daytime Entertainment. Millions of daytime television viewers recognize Sanders as “Clarence,” a cool, well-dressed character with an extensive hat collection, who provides a streetwise summary of the soap opera’s highlights each week.

Sanders, a Chicago native, attended Columbia College where he majored in television and radio production. After college, he moved to Los Angeles to further his career. Sanders is the owner and president of Babysitters Productions, the company he founded in 1989, which currently produces the Clarence Update and another online feature, An Inside Look at the News Inside the News, a news/comedy segment. Babysitters Productions has also created and syndicated radio programs including: On the Phone with Ti-Rone, in which Ti-Rone answers listener’s letters and phone calls with a little common sense advice; Gospel Ti-Rone, which focuses on the importance of having a personal relationship with God in handling life’s problems; What’s Poppin,’ a hip-hop dramedy; and It’s Your World, a fully produced short-form radio soap opera which aired daily on the Tom Joyner Morning Show for over 16 years. Co-created with comedian Myra Jay, It’s Your World showcased Sanders’ writing and production talents and was a national hit.

Comedy is where it all began. He decided to become a comedian for three reasons—he always enjoyed making people laugh, he loved the nightlife, plus “if you’re in show business, you get to go backstage.” While enjoying a career that spans television, radio, film and personal appearances, he continues to hone his skills in sketch writing, acting and voiceover classes, in addition to developing spec scripts for television sitcoms.

His ability to connect with audiences transcends the entertainment industry and has touched the lives of millions. In 2003, after 20 years of responding to thousands of letters, phone calls and emails from abused and discouraged women, he, along with media personality Deya Smith, co-founded Be Good to Women Day, an annual prayer vigil and community forum designed to honor women while addressing their safety and health issues. The national event is held in March during Women’s History Month. “The most important reason for honoring women,” says Sanders, “is that women are essential to the wellbeing of humanity. Women provide love. Nobody loves like a woman.”

Sanders believes his purpose as an entertainer is to provide laughter for people who need a break from the stresses of everyday life. “You can’t stay angry and laugh at the same time. Laughter can make your problems seem smaller. Sometimes, a good laugh can inspire hope.” He currently resides in Fayetteville, GA with his wife, the Reverend Joan Sanders. They have one daughter, Sadia Shamim Sanders, and are members of Flipper Chapel AME Church. Omowale Afrika, husband to LaToya, and father to Naima and Khairi, was born and raised in North Philadelphia. He attended William Penn High School, and was a graduate of the class of 2001. Shortly after graduating, he enrolled in the Philadelphia Diversity Apprenticeship Program to pursue a career in carpentry. Although the building trades did not provide the opportunity promised by the program, Omowale eventually began to volunteer his time with Men United for a Better Philadelphia, as a community organizer, and advocate against gun violence. His work with Men United led to an opportunity to partner with the School District of Philadelphia during the 2005-2006 school year, and subsequent employment with the City of Philadelphia’s – Adolescence Violence Reduction Program.

Omowale would go on to enroll in Northampton Community College in the Summer of 2008, and after obtaining an Associates of Arts in Business Administration, he transferred to Lehigh University, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business & Economics. Although professionally trained as a CPA, his education has always come from the wealth of walking libraries within the Black community. It is the latter type of experiential learning, that led him to service within the United Negro Improvement
Association (UNIA), where he served as the Division President at the International Head Quarters of the association.

In addition to his work as a community organizer, Omowale is also an essayist, and is currently penning his first book in an effort to raise the political consciousness of his generation. In this regard, Omowale considers his work to be an extension of the tradition started by Martin Robinson Delaney, but can also be found in the writings of Marcus Garvey, Harold Cruse, and other nationalist scholars whose production of educational content was largely outside of the academy.

Chetachi A. Egwu is a Nigerian American professor, writer/producer, filmmaker, dancer/choreographer, artist and actor. She earned a BA in Communication from the University of Buffalo in 1996, then moved on to Howard University in Washington, DC, where she completed a Masters and Ph.D. in Mass Communication.

Dr. Egwu has served as a faculty member in the communication departments at Morgan State University, The George Washington University and Nova Southeastern University. She is currently communication faculty at the University of Maryland University College.

Her work has been featured in academic journals, newspapers and online publications such as The Grio and The Burton Wire, her creative nature reaches beyond writing. Dr. Egwu is also a dancer/choreographer and was a member of Carla and Company, Coyaba Dance Theater, Choreographers Collaboration Project in Washington DC and featured in several other projects. An avid filmmaker, she is currently co-producer and co-director for the documentaries Runway Afrique and No Justice, No Peas: Getting A Veggie In The Hood, and co-producer, director and cinematographer for the documentary Sunshine Chic. Dr. Egwu also is the host of MediaScope on the streaming platforms such as Periscope.

12th Annual Textur’d Hair & Beauty Show, formerly the TORONTO NATURAL HAIR & BEAUTY SHOW, on September 23rd – 24th, 2017, at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre located at 6 Garamond Drive in Toronto, Ontario.

With a focus on reshaping our perception of natural hair and emphasizing its beauty to dissolve racial stereotypes, the Toronto Naturals Hair & Beauty Show provides attendees with an atmosphere of positivity, promoting natural hair, natural health and natural beauty.

This is a family event welcoming all people and encompasses over 50 exhibitors, interactive workshops, fashion & hair shows and live entertainment. At the show, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about various styling tips for natural hair, holistic health, fashion and much more!

This is Toronto’s longest running show on natural hair, health and beauty for people from the African Diaspora. Since its inception in 2003, the show has been a huge success, starting off as a one-day (4 hour) event with about 90 participants, to now a full two-day event with over 1000 visitors including international guests. This annual event continues to expand every year due to the fast growing number of African-Canadian women who are returning to wearing their hair in its natural state.

We take the feedback from our customers, vendors and sponsors seriously and have incorporated a system within our plan to ensure we identify and correct any gaps as well as build upon our strengths. As a result, we expect an even bigger, bolder and stronger 2016 Toronto Natural Hair & Beauty Show!

Recently, Stephanie Joseph, Founder/Executive Producer of the Textur’d Hair & Beauty Show was on our show.

Ms. Joseph was joined one the show by one of the guest speakers for this year’s Textur’d Hair & Beauty Show, Dr. Nadine Wong.

Dr. Nadine Wong is an immigrant of Jamaica who has called Canada home for over 20 years. She is the C.E.O of Alabaster Wellness Clinic, founder of Alabaster Gate Children’s Charity, creator of Alabaster Beauty Ointment Products, and author of “What If Your Hair Could Speak, What Would it Say?” “Revelation of my Hair Chronicle”, and currently, completing her third book, Sex- In my Christian Bed.

Dr. Wong has always been intrigued with human anatomy and physiology. After obtaining certificates in Psychology and Interpersonal Group Skills from Centennial College, and from Marvel Beauty School she obtained Hairdressing Diploma and Black Hair Dressing Certification. She furthered studies in Cosmetology and advance studies on Ethnic Hair at Dudley University, North Carolina. Dr. Wong obtained her Doctorate in Cosmetology from the Dillard University and another Doctorate in Trichology from The International Institute of Trichology, Huntsville, Alabama (board certified with the American Drugless Association). Her academic journey came full circle at the California State Christian University where she majored in Psychotherapy. There she has obtained her General Practice Psychotherapist (GPP) and Clinical Psychotherapy accreditations. Presently, she is completing studies in Pharmacology and Food Science at Durham College.

Dr. Wong’s mandate is through scientific research validate health is to be view as one unit. The issues of mental health, application of cosmetics, and consumption of foods are a ramification as a result of exposure to products.

Dr. Wong is a Board Member of the following organizations: The World Organization of Natural Medicine, The Board of Integrative Medicine (www.boim.org), The Board of Natural Medicine, Education Beyond Borders, The Black Hair Dresser Association(Canadian Chapter) and The National Beauty Culture League Inc., Washington DC. In addition to her practice, Dr. Wong is a sought after Motivational Speaker.

In 2013 she was the recipient of Harry Jerome Health Science Award, The Breakfast Club Award, also the 2003 Achievement Award, 2002 Trichology Student of the Year, and 2001 Pioneer Award. She also functioned as a guest Health advisor contributor on G98.7 FM (CKFG) and Spirit Radio Songs of Solomon. Her personal aspiration is to unlock the harmony of individual’s mind through education based on complete wellness involving the mind, body and spirit.

In 2010, Alabaster Gate Children’s Charity was established Dr. Nadine Wong, based on her desire that every child should be able to have an education and develop vital life skills. That each child should have the freedom to focus only on the lessons being taught in school, and not be distracted with concerns of a hot meal or finances to obtain the necessary school items. The charity also has grown and now includes The International Skype Education Project.

Elwood Watson is Professor of History and African American Studies at East Tennessee State University. His latest co-authored book is Violence Against Black Bodies:An Intersectional Analysis of How Black Lives Continue to Matter (Routledge Press, 2017). He is the author of Outsiders Within: Black Women In The Legal Academy After Brown V. Board (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2008). He is the editor and co-editor of several volumes including Generation Speaks: Voices from Academia (Scarecrow Press, 2013), Beginning a Career in Academia: A Guide for Graduate Students of Color (Routledge, 2015), The Oprah Phenomenon (University of Kentucky Press, 2007), Performing American Masculinity: The Twenty First Century Man in Popular Culture (Indiana University Press, 2011). His most recent co-authored book is HBO Girls: The Awkward Politics of Gender, Race and Privilege (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2015). He was the special guest editor for a special issue of the journal Intellect entitled Masculinity in the 21st Century. He is currnetly working on two books , one that looks at race in the present day and the other that looks at masculitny in the present.

The special guest for this conversation tonight was Dr. Marvin Thompson.

Dr. Marvin Thompson is an educational leader who has spent the majority of his 25 years in the educational field turning around schools in challenged communities. The scope of his experiences in schools range from pre-school director, elementary teacher to district superintendent.

In 2003, his efforts led to his school being recognized as one of the top 15 most changed schools in America through the National School Change Award Program. He served on the Virginia Academic Review Steering Committee, which reviewed, revised and developed school performance standards which are currently being used in states across America. He has served on Governor Mark Warner’s Economic Development committees and Governor Tim Kane’s early childhood committee.

As the Chief Academic Officer of a charter school in New Orleans, Dr. Thompson was featured in Oprah Winfrey’s Blackboard Wars, a nationally televised documentary bringing light to the challenges facing urban schools in America. The program received many awards including CableFax’s Best Documentary, The CINE Golden Eagle Award and the New York Festival’s TV and Film Award.

Dr. Thompson has many televison and radio apprearances including the CBS Morning News, The Tavis Smiley Show, LA Today, and CNN: Headline News as an educational commentator. In 2013, he was a speaker at the Steve Harvey Mentoring Camp for Boys and the Indiana Black Expo. Dr. Thompson was most recently an invited guest of the White House to speak at the 2015 Congressional Black Caucus Convention in Washington, D.C., to discuss the challenges facing boys in challenged communities.

Currently Dr. Thompson is the President and CEO of EmpowerED, and educational Consulting firm specializing in organizational systems development. His company has worked with schools across America from rural districts to some of the largest and most challenged such as the Los Angeles Unified School District. In 2009, Dr. Thompson was an invited member of the International Exchange of Scholars to assist the University of South Africa, the 4th largest university in the world, in revising its educational curriculum. These efforts will influence over fifty percent of the teacher workforce in the continent of Africa.

Dr. Thompson received his Ed.D. degree in Leadership & Policy Studies from The George Washington University, an M.ED in Administration & Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Psychology and Education from Randolph Macon College in Virginia.

Tommy J. Curry is a Professor of Philosophy at Texas A&M University. He is a Ray A. Rothrock Fellow and has commented on social matters in venues ranging from Forbes, to Sirius XM. He is the author of over 50 articles on issues of racism, anti-Black violence, and the institutionalization of Black male death. He is working on a forthcoming books on Black male vulnerability entitled the Man-Not, and the Eschatology of Kanye West. Dr. Curry is a strong advocate and thinker for the reconceptualization of Black men and boys. He is adamant that the arguments used to justify their death and incarceration by Black and white scholars alike must be challenged.

Jazz Keyes is a clinical psychologist, certified life coach, author, and motivational speaker. Recognized for her work as a community activist, Keyes has spent the last 10 years of her career focusing on empowering the lives of others. With an intense focus on women, people of color, and children, Keyes has been honored as a Neighborhood Hero by ComEd for her involvement in numerous community-based initiatives.

Ms. Keyes is preparing to begin her PHD program Fall 2017. She will be studying to receive her Doctor of Philosophy in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in Couples Therapy. Keyes has devoted a great deal of her time and energy on mastering the art of communication to create healthy, dynamic, long-lasting relationships and to help others do the same.

Jazz Keyes is an aspiring bestselling author. Focusing on spirituality, emotional empowerment, and love, Keyes hopes to one day deliver soul healing messages as a television personality and international inspirational speaker.

Steven Kiges (pron. Key-jez) is the co-founder and director of The Coach Training Academy. The Coach Training Academy is a professional, International Coach Federation accredited coach training school. Graduates have gone on to both build very successful solo coaching practices as well as taking their coaching skills to corporate positions including Microsoft, Google, and NASA, just to name a few.

Victor A. Kwansa, Esq. is an attorney, education advocate, poet, and essayist from Prince George’s County, Maryland. He received a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University in 2008, and he graduated from Harvard Law School in 2011. His essays have been featured in Blavity and a Yale booklet for incoming freshmen. While at Yale, Victor co-founded WORD, a performance poetry group. The special guest for this conversation tonight was Dr. Marvin Thompson.

Dr. Marvin Thompson is an educational leader who has spent the majority of his 25 years in the educational field turning around schools in challenged communities. The scope of his experiences in schools range from pre-school director, elementary teacher to district superintendent.

In 2003, his efforts led to his school being recognized as one of the top 15 most changed schools in America through the National School Change Award Program. He served on the Virginia Academic Review Steering Committee, which reviewed, revised and developed school performance standards which are currently being used in states across America. He has served on Governor Mark Warner’s Economic Development committees and Governor Tim Kane’s early childhood committee.

As the Chief Academic Officer of a charter school in New Orleans, Dr. Thompson was featured in Oprah Winfrey’s Blackboard Wars, a nationally televised documentary bringing light to the challenges facing urban schools in America. The program received many awards including CableFax’s Best Documentary, The CINE Golden Eagle Award and the New York Festival’s TV and Film Award.

Dr. Thompson has many televison and radio apprearances including the CBS Morning News, The Tavis Smiley Show, LA Today, and CNN: Headline News as an educational commentator. In 2013, he was a speaker at the Steve Harvey Mentoring Camp for Boys and the Indiana Black Expo. Dr. Thompson was most recently an invited guest of the White House to speak at the 2015 Congressional Black Caucus Convention in Washington, D.C., to discuss the challenges facing boys in challenged communities.

Currently Dr. Thompson is the President and CEO of EmpowerED, and educational Consulting firm specializing in organizational systems development. His company has worked with schools across America from rural districts to some of the largest and most challenged such as the Los Angeles Unified School District. In 2009, Dr. Thompson was an invited member of the International Exchange of Scholars to assist the University of South Africa, the 4th largest university in the world, in revising its educational curriculum. These efforts will influence over fifty percent of the teacher workforce in the continent of Africa.

Dr. Thompson received his Ed.D. degree in Leadership & Policy Studies from The George Washington University, an M.ED in Administration & Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Psychology and Education from Randolph Macon College in Virginia.

In observance of Black Mental Health Awareness Month, G.R.I.O.T. are continuing their series of symposiums, Tackling the Taboo. In this series, we touch on issues that often go ignored within the Black community (especially issues related to Black males). These events are meant to raise awareness and help the community and the members of it.

In this installment, G.R.I.O.T. will be discussing Black Mental Health issues facing our Black Male Community. Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve is Assistant Professor at Temple University in the Department of Criminal Justice, with courtesy appointments in the Department of Sociology and the Beasley School of Law. She is a recipient of the 2014-2015 Ford Foundation Fellowship, an affiliated scholar with the American Bar Foundation, and a former Research Director for Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice. Steven Kiges (pron. Meme Kelly has a B.A. from UCLA and a MFA in playwriting from The University of California, Riverside.

She’s a producer and author of four plays and the author of three self-published books and two eBooks, which have been sold nationally at Barnes and Noble and on Amazon. She was a Distinquished Dean’s Fellow for a MFA in Creative Writing and Creative Writing for Performing Arts and a Gluck Foundation Fellow at The University of California, Riverside. As a Gluck Fellow, Meme introduced over 200 elementary school children to theater arts. She’s also passionate about serving homeless women and young adults with disabilities and has served in a non-profit for many years.

She is a contributor for Huffpost and writes about anything that tugs at her heart. She recently completed her first short film, Out of Bounds, and it’s receiving rave reviews. Out of Bounds received sponsorship awards from The University of California Graduate Division, from The Film and Theater Arts Department, and from The School of Interdisciplinary Studies. The short was inspired by a TV pilot script with the same name that was selected as a top 10 semi-finalist out of 175 scripts in UCLA Film School’s Samuel Goldwyn contest. The University of California, Riverside also recommended it for a Humanitas Prize, www.humanitasprize.org .

She is the mother of three wonderful sons and her oldest, who has been a miracle in her life, is autistic; She’s been married to her UCLA college sweetheart for a very long time. She resides in Southern California.

Music industry veteran Paul Porter has released the book Blackout, an explosive look at the corruption running rampant in the music industry. Blackout details Porter’s experiences in the music industry, from his first stint in radio in 1976 – when the busing riots in Boston sent him scrambling into WRBB at Northeastern University – to his tenure at BET and some of the nation’s top-rated radio stations.

“Blackout is a chronicle of my successes and failures, my dreams and disappointments in the music business,” Porter said. “It’s filled with the secrets the music industry desperately tries to keep, the stories no one tells. I wanted to expose the truth about the industry I love.”

Blackout takes readers on a ride through Porter’s whirlwind of media jobs, working for and with some of the music industry’s most colorful, well-known and scandalous players. It explores the insidious role of payola, an illegal practice that is firmly embedded in the music industry, deep in the grooves like tracks on a vinyl record. And it offers an inside account of how corporations killed Black radio and erased Black identity from mainstream Black music — and why Porter chose to fight back.

The book has already garnered the endorsement of major cultural figures, including Chuck D of Public Enemy, who called Porter a “guru and visionary” and said “Blackoutwill truly explain why things are the way they are.”

Tim Winter, president of the Parents Television Council, called Blackout a “compelling, personal story about how the music industry really operates” that “also offers an enlightening message of hope for the music industry and for its broader impact on our culture.”

Michie Mee is known within the music industry for her unique rap style of combining reggae and dancehall with hip-hop. Many successful artists have followed in Michie’s footsteps using this gifted technique. With over two decades in the entertainment industry, the Juno nominated rapper and actress is not only an inspiration for female musicians, but also all artists nationwide.

Michelle McCullock was born in St. Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica, later relocating to Toronto, Ontario at a young age. While in her mid teens, Michie began crafting her rap style, which quickly gained attention by both Canadian and American rap artists. Michie would also travel frequently from Toronto to New York City giving her more exposure amongst the hip-hop elite.

While performing in rap battles, Michie introduced a new formula by being able to switch back and forth between North American English and the Jamaican form of English known as Jamaican Creole or Patois. This daring move would ignite audiences and leave often Michie’s rap battle competitors stunned.

During a concert in Toronto, fate stepped in and Michie was introduced by Boogie Down Productions to perform on stage. This was a major accomplishment for a young Canadian MC to receive such recognition by a successful New York rap group. Michie would go on to team up with DJ L.A. Luv and form the duo, Michie Mee and L.A. Luv. By the late 1980s, Michie was featured in the Canadian hip-hop compilation Break’n Out, which was produced by B.D.P. members, KRS-ONE and the late Scott La Rock.

By the ending of the decade, Michie Mee would make history by signing with First Priority/Atlantic Records, making her the first Canadian rapper to sign with a major record label in the United States. Elements of Style was Michie’s first single with L.A. Luv. The single was successful in the U.S. and the duo also appeared on the compilation The First Priority Music Family: Basement Flavor on tracks Victory is Calling and On This Mic.

In 1991, Michie released her debut album, Jamaican Funk: Canadian Style, which infused reggae and dancehall elements within the rap album. The hit single, Jamaican Funk, received a Juno Award nomination in 1992.

Throughout her career, Michie has opened for many artists including Will Smith, Salt n Pepa, Heavy D, and LL Cool J. She also had the pleasure of touring with Queen Latifah, Audio Two and fellow Canadians, Maestro Fresh Wes and the Dream Warriors. Although she was a powerful force within the hip-hop culture, Michie’s musical talents did not stop there.

She went on tour with singer Sinead O’Conner and was a founding member of the metal band The Day After, formally called Raggadeath, once again showing her skills as a versatile musician.

In 2000, Michie released another album with Koch/E1 titled, The First Cut Is The Deepest, which would bring forth yet another hit single Don’t Want To Be Your Slave. The single featured Esthero and earned Michie another Juno nomination. That same year, while promoting her new album, Michie also toured hip-hop super group, Public Enemy.

Although Michie has a profound love for music, she has also showcased her talents outside of the music industry. As a member of ACTRA, she has acted in movies and television shows such as Short Circuit 2, Night Heat, La Femme Nikita (CTV), Da Kink In My Hair, Soulfood, and has made a special appearance co-hosting TSN’s Off The Record. She was also co-host of Canada’s longest running rap radio show, The Powermove Show on CKLN Radio in Toronto.

Michie has starred in the groundbreaking hip-hop series Drop The Beat and appeared in the blockbuster In Too Deep starring LL Cool J and Omar Epps, My Baby’s Mama with Eddie Griffin and “Chicks With Sticks” featuring Jason Priestly. Michie’s vibrant nature in a work environment is frequently noted and she is often asked to host events, which she does on a regular basis.

Aside from her life as an entertainer, Michie is also a mother who makes it one of her duties to keep involved with today’s youth. Knowing first hand the twists and turns artists often face in entertainment, Michie is an avid supporter of children striving to achieve a good education. Michie herself left university after her music career began to soar and has always spoken openly about the importance of education.

Michie Mee has had an outstanding career in entertainment thus far. With her currently working on hot new music, acting roles and a feature in the 2011 CBC hip-hop documentary Love, Props and the T. Dot, this trailblazer’s saga still continues. Michie Mee’s reign as Queen is far from over.

Dr. Candice Bledsoe is the director of the Action Research Center in Dallas, Texas. Her research explores the impact of race, gender, and class in higher education contexts. She has received numerous fellowships including: The National Endowment of the Humanities, the New Leadership Academy, National Center for Institutional Diversity, University of Michigan, and Boone Texas Project for Human Rights Education. Dr. Bledsoe is the recipient of the 2013 SMU Women’s Symposium Profiles of Community Leadership Award. She received her Doctorate in Education from The University of Southern California. This year, as Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary, ByBlacks.com would love to also celebrate Black Canadian fathers that provide the necessary emotional and financial support for their children daily.

The Father Project will showcase over 150 Black fathers from across Greater Toronto and highlight their perspective on being a dad in this modern day society.

In the profiles, each father will reflect on their relationship with their own father and how that has affected their relationship with their children.

The men selected will be drawn from various walks of life showing the diversity in ethnic background, marital status, sexuality, religious beliefs and socioeconomic standing within Canada. The Father Project want to demonstrate and celebrate inclusivity in parenting.

Between Sept 2004 – Feb 2006, Tad Hargrave dedicated himself to learning his ancestral language, Scottish Gaelic, in both Nova Scotia and Scotland. He can speak Gaelic pretty good now. He also has a blog called Healing Whiteness: An Exploration of the European Indigenous Soul. he writes at Dear White Men on Facebook and he co-starred in Canada’s second Gaelic language film, The Fiddler’s Reel.

Tad currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta (traditionally known, in the local indigenous language of the Cree, as Amiskwaciy (Beaver Hill) and later Amiskwaciwaskihegan (Beaver Hill House) and his ancestors come primarily from Scotland with some from the Ukraine as well. Anthony Carter combines his love of theatre, writing, storytelling, and black queer feminist theory to create projects that inspire all to greatness. He was a semifinalist in the Strawberry One Act Festival 2007 with his play Breakfast for Dinner. His book Unfettered Mind: The Importance of Black Male Mental Health, released in 2012, offers several winning strategies for remaining mentally healthy and emotionally resilient in a rapidly changing world.

Mr. Carter’s second book, Strong Stuff: Tips on Surviving and Thriving Despite Unemployment, offers insight on maintaining self-esteem and personal friendships while one searches for work. Based on personal experiences (2.5 years of unemployment and some homelessness), this latest book is full of exercises and quick easy to read and apply tips for thriving despite being jobless. In February 2016, he is publishing his first collection of Sci-Fi/ – speculative fiction short stories entitled Rules of Reality.

Black male students from grades 8-10 will have the opportunity to network and learn about future academic pathways and positive transitions at The Cypher: Black Male Empowerment Conference. The conference, set to take place May 24, 2017, will offer students and faculty in attendance a unique learning environment and the chance to meet community leaders.

Keynote speaker, Dwayne Morgan, will address the audience in the morning. The local award winning spoken word poet will share his story that focuses on everyday excellence.

Francis Asheri will serve as the alumni youth speaker for the event. The former DDSB student trustee from Ajax HS won the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership in 2014.

Durham District School Board alumni, teachers and community members will lead presentations throughout the day. A variety of presentations include “February is Black History Month – What Should I Be Getting Out of This?” and “#Blackmencarefree – What Lebron, Kendrick and the 13th can teach us about Masculinity in 2017” as well as many others.

Elwood Watson is Professor of History and African American Studies at East Tennessee State University. His latest co-authored book is Violence Against Black Bodies:An Intersectional Analysis of How Black Lives Continue to Matter (Routledge Press, 2017). He is the author of Outsiders Within: Black Women In The Legal Academy After Brown V. Board (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2008). He is the editor and co-editor of several volumes including Generation Speaks: Voices from Academia (Scarecrow Press, 2013), Beginning a Career in Academia: A Guide for Graduate Students of Color (Routledge, 2015), The Oprah Phenomenon (University of Kentucky Press, 2007), Performing American Masculinity: The Twenty First Century Man in Popular Culture (Indiana University Press, 2011). His most recent co-authored book is HBO Girls: The Awkward Politics of Gender, Race and Privilege (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2015). He was the special guest editor for a special issue of the journal Intellect entitled Masculinity in the 21st Century. He is currnetly working on two books , one that looks at race in the present day and the other that looks at masculitny in the present.
