Aisha K. Staggers has been writing since middle school. She had her first major publication in her local newspaper’s entertainment section while a sophomore in high school, a publication in another state paper followed. Aisha has been contributing to various paper, magazines and textbooks for over 15 years.

In addition to her time as an instructor of social sciences in higher education, Aisha has served as a director of education and policy research centers, and on the staff of legislative commissions. Aisha previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats Women’s Caucus and has remained active in politics and public policy. She is an alumni of Albertus Magnus College and Fisk University where she earned Bachelor’s in Communications and Master’s Degree in Psychology, respectively, and completed the Education Policy Fellowship Program in 2008.

Currently, Aisha is Senior Editor for BookTrib, a division of the literary public relations firm, Meryl Moss Media and a HuffPost contributor. In addition to her own work, Aisha has written liner notes for a Prince tribute album, I Wish U Heaven released December 25 and available on YouTube. In 2018, she will be contributing to scholarly work on Prince and the Minneapolis Sound and sitting on an NYU panel for a conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of his Lovesexy album.

While Aisha enjoys writing about music, she feels the most critical discussions we can have today are centered around race and intersectionality because “you can’t fix a problem you don’t acknowledge, and not acknowledging the plight of women of color and specifically Black women is a problem.”

During the most recent episode of Staggers State Of Things, Ms. Staggers talked about:

– Ronny Jackson’s nomination as American Veteran’s Affair Secretary
– The killing of four people at a Nashville-area Waffle House and the killing of ten people in Toronto by a man driving a van

Aisha Heywood’s early life experiences helped her become a focused results-oriented individual who is passionate about her community. The catalyst for her interest in community involvement and her political aspirations began with her mother, who introduced her to volunteerism and community building. Beginning with regular volunteer opportunities at Tropicana Community Services and the local Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, Aisha was eager to be involved with meeting the needs of others. In her teen years, Aisha was exposed to inspiring and professional women who ignited her passion to live a meaningful and successful life. Aisha’s spiritual journey has also reinforced my early interests and passion in advocating for people.

Upon moving to the City of Pickering, Ontario, Aisha was immediately compelled to be actively involved in her new place of residence. After seeing a posting for the Pickering Accessibility Advocacy Committee, Aisha joined and remained a member for over seven years. In addition, Aisha has volunteered in various committees within the Durham Children’s Aid Society and currently serve as a Director on the Board.

Aisha has her Master’s degree in Education at the University of Toronto. Over the past ten years, Aisha’s graduate studies have continued to open doors for her to support individuals with brain injury, mental health challenges, and developmental disabilities, as well as their families in hospital settings, in homes, on school boards, and in other community settings. Aisha has extensive experience providing crisis management, behaviour intervention, suicide intervention, counselling and case management.

Aisha’s employment history includes the Durham District School Board(Psychometrist), Simcoe District School Board (ABA Coordinator), Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health (Behaviour Therapist), Faculty at Centennial College and PryorLinder and Associates (Behaviour Therapist).

On this episode of Staggers State Of Things, Ms. Staggers talked about:

– A video montage of news anchors at Sinclair Broadcast Group stations across America regurgitating the same company-mandated script decrying “false news” went viral
– 45 being regarded as a subject and not a target in the Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian intervention in the last American presidential election
– The recent shooting at YouTube headquarters
– The 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr.
