Daniel Bonzil has worked in facilitation, training, translation, and he is currently an interpreter for Haitians and French speakers who need interpretation at their medical and immigration and legal appointments.

Sickle Cell Disease was an unknown notion as foreign as a distant galaxy at a trillion light years away until his youngest son was diagnosed with this chronic condition at the age of 5. For a few years, life seemed like a roller coaster that would not stop. As Daniel and his wife learned more about the disease and became involved in volunteering, gradually order came out of chaos, acceptance and resilience sprung from adversity, gratitude manifested despite their trials. What happened? They put into practice what a famous radio broadcast pastor said : «Do not waste your pain, use it to help others». Learning from our pain, sharing our tidbits of wisdom and opening our hearts and mind to the others who have travelled this road before, that is a more productive way to deal with the challenges of having Sickle Cell Disease in the family.

Daniel is a Board member of The Sickle Cell Association of QuébecThe Sickle Cell Association of Québec is a volunteer organization and a leading source of solace to children and anyone suffering from sickle cell disease. They educate families on lifestyle practices and personal coping skills for living with this condition.

Ryan continues to develop a slate of projects including 2 feature films supported by Telefilm Development Fund.

Memento: A South African Artventure is a lively, energetic archival documentary that chronicles maiden voyage of several Afro-Canadian persons and their friends on an excursion to South Africa. Their journey sees the adventurers bridge the knowledge of Africa from second-hand information to a first-hand experience as seen through the eyes of Spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan and Dancer April Mullings. Their journey is facilitated by Ramie Veerappan, an 79-year vibrant activist who lived through the apartheid era, left the country and later returned to the new South Africa, a place she always loves but now wants to share with the world.

H.E.N.R.I. follows a grieving 7-year-old Simon after the loss of his father, as he seeks answers from his Artificial Intelligence (AI) communicator while his mother and twin sister try to adjust to their new reality.

A family affair, H.E.N.R.I. was co-written by Singh and his six-year-old twins, Ava (Tall Boyz, Handmaid’s Tale) and Sebastian (Suits, Handmaid’s Tale, Silent) who also appear in the film.

100% of the cast of H.E.N.R.I. was BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) and more than 80% of the crew was BIPOC or women, including DGC director Katarzyna Kochany, producer/actor Andrea Grant (Get Rich or Die Tryin’, The Listener), and composer Aaron Manswell. The entire VFX crew is BIPOC, including VFX artists Adrian Bobb, Colin Walcott, Cait Salmon, as well as Akash Singh and his team at Akash Productions.

H.E.N.R.I. is recipient of seven Global awards, Programmed in 8+ festivals including a not yet released Oscar Qualifying festival. The flim is playing in three films festivals in the next two weeks including Calgary Black Film FestivalHamilton Black Film Festival, and US premiere at the New York City Independent Film Festival.

Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company.

As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education.

Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy.

Jill Jones is our special guest for this conversation. Ms. Jones is activist, feminist, former collaborator with Paisley Park.
