Growing up, Sheree loved the smells and tastes of her mother’s soul food cooking. The food cooked and enjoyed by her family provided simple thrills and delicious memories. The thought of tasting the unfamiliar was not appealing and the comfort zone created since being a child seemed to be as good as it gets. That all changed over the years starting with college and later into her adult life when she began to discover and explore a whole new world and relationship with food. Today, she is writing about her delicious relationship as the publisher of Cuisine Noir, the country’s first Black online and print food, wine and travel magazine. Re-launched online in September 2009 and debuting in print in September 2011 (2011 – 2017) under her company V. Sheree Creative Enterprises, Cuisine Noir is a lifestyle publication centered on connecting the African diaspora through food, wine and travel. Designing a niche publication was an easy fit for Sheree who is also a multicultural marketing consultant. She knew that such a publication was not only needed but will be widely received by all. And it has. It would also provide a clear and distinct media outlet for advertisers executing multicultural campaigns geared toward Blacks with a food, health, wine/spirits and travel focus. Sheree’s leadership has successfully started a new cultural culinary movement by putting Black chefs, culinary professionals and vintners in the forefront to showcase their talents and contributions to foodies, media and key industry companies. She has interviewed some of the most talented chefs across the country as well as celebrities such as Chef Govind Armstrong, Chef Carla Hall, the late Dr. Maya Angelou, George Duke, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Chef Roger Mooking, Niecy Nash, Russell Simmons, Grace Hightower DeNiro and Charlie Wilson. In addition to writing about the chefs behind the food, she was produced and organized cooking demonstrations with a variety of celebrity chefs such as Chef Jeff Henderson (The Food Network), Chef Aaron McCargo, Jr. (The Food Network), Chef Tre Wilcox (Bravo’s Top Chef), Chef Darrell “DAS” Smith (The Food Network), Chef G. Garvin (The Cooking Channel), Chef Kevin Sbraga (Bravo’s Top Chef), Chef Bryant Terry (Author – Vegan Soul Kitchen), Chef Rock Harper (Winner of Hell’s Kitchen Season 3) and Chef Nikki Shaw (The Food Network). Event culinary programming clients include United Negro College Fund, Bay Area Black Expo and The Network for a Healthier California. From 2011- 2015, she was the stage manager for Unicomm’s Travel and Adventure Show’s Taste of Travel stage that traveled to seven cities and worked with local and celebrity chefs as well as restaurants and destinations around the world. She was a sofi Awards judge for the Specialty Food Association and was also recognized by Dine Diaspora as one of 31 Women in Food to know during Women’s History Month in 2019. In 2020, she was among 26 Black and White women participating in the #sharethemicfoodandbev campaign created to amplify the voices of Black women in these industries. Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Sheree holds a Bachelor of Science in Advertising from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications with a Concentration in Public Relations from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. She currently lives in Oakland, Calif., and enjoys trying new restaurants, cooking, gardening, traveling, hiking, relaxing on the beach and food and travel photography. Recently, V. Grace JerkFest was presented by TD Ready Commitment and went virtual this year due to COVID-19. The food, music and fun times was live streamed on www.jerkfestival.ca on August 8th and August 9th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. each night. There was no cost, everyone was invited and saw jerk cooking demonstrations, Canadian dancers, singers, steelpan artists as well as the international headliners: Beenie Man, Jah Cure, Lila Ike and Alison Hinds. We had the opportunity to speak with Jah Cure before this year’s Grace JerkFest. You may know him as Jah Cure. Perhaps you know him by his given name, Siccaturie Alcock. But as the saying goes, “What’s in a name?” Most importantly, you must know his message. His music is at once his spirit, his all-consuming passion, and his personal declaration of a belief in a universal consciousness based on love and positivity. Born in Hanover, Jamaica on October 11th, 1978, the global force that is Jah Cure has been a long time in the making. From as little as three years old, this child of slight build would captivate those around him with his innate musical virtuosity. As he and his love for the art grew, the young man whose voice would make any songbird green with envy would sneak out of his bedroom window late at night to visit local dancehalls and stage shows. It was here that he became immersed in the stylings of the undisputed greats: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffith, Garnett Silk, Yami Bolo, Jacob Miller and Black Uhuru. A young Siccaturie knew that he would dedicate himself to achieving membership of this superlative group. Initially using the name ‘Little Melody’, Siccaturie’s voice started to leave an indelible impression in the streets and he soon became the talk of Jamaica. At the age of fifteen, he moved to Kingston. The name Jah Cure was bestowed upon him by the world-renowned Capleton and the David House Crew. This was primarily due to the vast amount of herb he smoked in the quest for spiritual enlightenment – a daily custom of his Rastafarian religion and commitment to natural living. Using the plants of the land for medicinal purposes, the singer looked young and healthy. He was ‘well-preserved’ or ‘cured’. Jamaican music icon, Beres Hammond, subsequently took Cure under his wing and became his mentor and producer. However, Cure’s journey would be unexpectedly interrupted when in 1998 he was stopped and arrested late one night in Montego Bay. He was charged with four crimes, all of which he vehemently denies to this day. A non-jury trial was convened (one in which a single judge decides both questions of law and fact) and unfortunately, despite a total lack of visual confirmation of his involvement in said crimes, Cure was given a 15 year sentence. Not letting this setback disrupt his dream, Cure recorded and released many #1 singles from jail. The songs “Jamaica” and “Longing For” were both local and global successes. Cure’s first album, FREE JAH’S CURE, was recorded and released in 2001. On this project, Cure conveys his gratitude for life. He believes his incarceration was Jah’s way of teaching him humility, kindness, forgiveness and love for his fellow man. Consequently, he has relinquished any resentment for those who judged him unjustly. In 2003, Beres Hammond produced Cure’s second album, GHETTO LIFE, which featured the acclaimed single Divide and Rule. On his first day of freedom, Cure publicly stated that his only remaining life goal would be to use his music as a means of spreading love, peace and healing. Since 2007, Jah Cure has topped the charts with several # 1 singles – Call on Me, featuring Phyllisia, followed by You’ll Never Find, and Unconditional Love, which quickly became the #1 reggae single worldwide. The song Like I See It, featuring Rick Ross, and the remix with dancehall king Mavado, undeniably rocked the international reggae scene. Released in 2013, the album WORLD CRY featured collaborations with the talents of Tupac, Keri Hilson, Mavado, MDMA, Rick Ross, Jazmine Sullivan, Shyne and several others. It can confidently be described as an auditory explosion that crossed and entwined the genres of reggae, hip hop, R&B, Latin and pop. During our conversation, Jah Cure talked about: – Some of his background including growing up in jungle in Jamaica You can find out more information about Jah Cure via: Website You can find out more about Grace Jerkfest 2020 via: Website Visit The Dr. Vibe Show™ at https://www.thedrvibeshow.com/ Please feel free to email us at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook Fan page here God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith,

![]() How She Hustles, with proud sponsors CIBC and exclusive media partner, Rogers Sports & Media, is excited to produce the second annual Startup & Slay Digital Series featuring Canada’s diverse women entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs profiled in this series will share inspiring stories about starting, sustaining and scaling their small businesses, despite uncertain economic times. The entrepreneurs will be featured in weekly video chats and publicity campaign during October’s Small Business Month 2020. We welcome applications from non-binary entrepreneurs while we work on a more gender inclusive framework for How She Hustles. The application process is underway to select Canadian women entrepreneurs who are soaring in this year of uncertainty. “These are turbulent times with both the COVID-19 pandemic and the acknowledgement of the toll racism has taken on communities of colour – particularly in the areas of business and simply trying to make a living,” said Emily Mills, founder of How She Hustles/Startup & Slay. “With this digital series we are hoping to change how we perceive entrepreneurs in this country and broaden that definition so more people can see themselves reflected.” The national call out is to self-identified women entrepreneurs from diverse and underrepresented communities to share their stories of starting and scaling a small business in Canada. How She Hustles welcomes applications from non-binary entrepreneurs while working on a more gender inclusive framework. Many businesses have had to pivot and change their game-plan to adjust to the current economic climate, social distancing rules and doing business virtually. We want to hear how women-led businesses have been able to keep afloat and, in some cases, increase their productivity during the pandemic. The selected entrepreneurs will be featured in weekly live streamed video chats during October’s Small Business Month. Applicants have until July 31, 2020 to share their story here. Last year, Startup & Slay evolved into a national digital video series. Out of more than 100 applicants from five difference provinces and 30 different communities, six Canadian businesses were selected to share their journey on camera. They were also provided opportunities to share their stories with media outlets and at panel and networking events in Toronto during Small Business Week. You can find out more about and apply for the Startup & Slay Digital Series via: Startup & Slay Digital Series One of the entrepreneurs who has benefited from How She Hustles/Startup And Slay is Jalisa Luces-Mendes. ![]() Desmond Williams is a career teacher, principal, author and thought leader. He is driven to help all children live their dreams. Desmond had two dreams growing up: He wanted to design Transformers and be a sitcom writer. After having many teachers tell him those dreams were silly, he decided he wanted to teach because he knew children deserved better. He has spent his entire professional career working with youth serving as a special educator, classroom teacher, assistant principal and principal. His educational philosophy is simply that education should be used for the process of building and maintaining a nation. He received his Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Howard University in Washington, DC. He later received his master’s degree in Education and Human Development from George Washington University. He started his teaching career in DCPS as a special educator. He subsequently moved through the ranks and became a special education coordinator because of his business acumen and understanding of children with special needs. Soon afterwards Mr. Williams, worked in the Office of Special Education for DC Public Schools. After leaving DCPS’s Office of Special Education, he ventured into the world of school-based administration. His expertise includes, student engagement, restorative justice, relationship building with students, and family engagement. Desmond has spoken at multiple conferences across the country offering his expertise and insight in engaging inner-city students. He has worked with several independent schools and school districts. His focus is on educating boys of color. “They are the most marginalized and are in need of the most help. “Teachers that serve them, tend to be the teachers that are in need of the most support.” His other passions include teacher development, leadership development, special education and engaging boys of color in learning. In 2015, he launched the #SOBTC Twitter chat that united teachers, educators, parents and practitioners from across the country to discuss issues related to educating boys of color. #SOBTC, Send Our Boys To College started because he wanted those invested in the growth of Black boys to have a platform to discuss challenges and celebrate successes. Desmond served six years at an all-boys school in Washington DC, teaching four years and serving as principal for two more years. His first year as an administrator reading scores soared to 64% proficient. In his second year, and upon his departure, The Bishop Walker School boasted reading scores of 83% proficiency. After leaving BWS, Desmond founded and launched Nylinka School Solutions. One of Desmond’s big goals was to help other educators increase the level of engagement and investment of boys of color. Mr. Williams does this by leveraging his experience and expertise to aid schools and school districts. The goal of Nylinka School Solutions is to help children achieve their dreams one solution at a time. In all, Desmond has spent nine years as a teacher and seven as an administrator. However, his greatest satisfaction is seeing kids maintain their enthusiasm for leaving their mark on the world. He has recently ventured into the world of writing. His first book The Burning House: Educating Black Boys in Modern America was released in February of 2020 and debuted as a #1 New Release. In the fall of 2020, Desmond will return to Howard University to pursue his PhD in Educational Psychology. Recently, Mr. Williams was a guest on Black Men Talking™ … A Digital Journey About The Lives Of Black Men …. Candies Kotchapaw is a community builder and networker, holding Master and Bachelor degrees in Social Work from York University and a diploma in Child and Youth Work from George Brown College. While completing the Master program, Candies encountered systemic conditions that tried to prevent her from successfully completing the program. These forces included feelings of isolation in education, financial blocks, lack of mentorship and a sense that striving for greater was pointless. Candies found support in one faculty member who invested time and effort in developing her Major Research Project entitled, ‘The Politics of Social Work: Do Racialized Social Workers belong in the Practice Space of Public Policy Development?’ From this Major Research Paper, in 2016 Candies was invited to present her findings at graduate student conferences at York University at the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies, The Global Labour Research Centre and the School of Social Work’s graduate symposium. Further, Candies was a panel presenter in Seattle, Washington at the Institute for Research on Labour and Employment (IRLE). As the only black female presenter at this conference, Candies began to interrogate how to make spaces of influence in education and the broader society more accessible for the black community. It was here that the idea of creating a program that combined mentorship with capacity building began to develop. Following completion of the Master of Social Work program, Candies founded the project called Developing Young Leaders of Tomorrow, Today (DYLOTT). This program serves the purpose of connecting participants of the program with strong mentors within the black community and non-racialized allies who have been successful at navigating systemic structures and creating access to available opportunities for marginalized people. As DYLOTT continues to evolve into a unique leadership skills development program, Candies continues to inform the program through her research into precarious work and its effects specifically on the black community. The Jahmeyka Project is a non-profit organization run by licensed social workers and funded solely by donations, seeking to directly benefit social services and communities in Jamaica. The Jahmeyka Project origins began twenty years ago when Dr. Leslie Yaffa went to Jamaica as a Master’s of Social Work student. She became a college professor and created a graduate-level course that offered students an international social work experience focused on community engagement in Jamaica. After 5 years of visiting multiple agencies, providing community service to selected agencies, and experiencing the Jamaican social service culture, it was clear to Dr. Yaffa that the work, partnerships and connections to the communities had to go beyond the classroom. Today, the Jahmeyka Project utilizes a service-learning and educational approach to integrate with our partnerships in Jamaica. We build on critical and reflective thinking, community service, partnership responsibility and inclusion. Through knowledge mobilization and partnerships, we are continuing to build a non-profit that will be open to all helping professions in future years who want to engage in professional trainings, workshops, field placements (into Jamaican organizations), outreach and research in Jamaica. Beyond our work on the ground, The Jahmeyka Project supports organizations in the Kingston, Jamaica area who have identified needs in their communities for goods such as school supplies and hygiene products.. We also donate funds to agencies for their operating costs that are deemed to be most in need based upon our application process. The Jahmeyka Project’s mission is to enhance community partnerships through a collaborative knowledge exchange as an ally with social services in Jamaica. The Jahmeyka Project’s vision is to foster inclusion of social services through education alongside helping professionals by engaging in mutual partnerships and communities in the Caribbean. Recently, members of The Jahmeyka Project were live on our show. He has served on Governor Mark Warner’s Economic Development committees and Governor Tim Kane’s early childhood committee. An expert in urban education, Dr. Miller has specialized in school reform and redesign for over 20 years, counseling school officials and administrators on effective strategies to increase performance among black males and establish a culture of success. He has committed his life to educating and empowering low-income urban youth with the intention to facilitate change and undo the trend of academic underachievement that often plagues young black men from the inner city. The passion did not begin with his professional career, but was implanted in him as a youth growing up in the projects of Rochester, NY. Similar to many of his students, Dr. Miller understands the challenges that often knock young minority men off-course and hinder their ability to reach their full potential. However, he teaches students not to be victims, but to use adversity as fuel to succeed and rise above their circumstances. Since taking over Green Tech in 2012, Dr. Miller has turned the school into one of the best in New York State. Under his leadership, graduation rates have soared – reaching an impressive 95% with a 100% college acceptance rate for graduates. In addition, students have earned over $25 million in scholarships, compared to only $200,000 before he arrived. Dr. Miller has been recognized by the City of Albany as a Man of Valor, and as one of the top 40 Under 40 African American Leaders by the City of Rochester, among many other accomplishments. He is often invited to speak to students and to offer strategic counsel to school leaders on improving school systems and more effectively engaging students. The controversial report argued that combating poverty required strengthening families in the United States—particularly through positively impacting Black men. Dark Girls, the documentary feature has created a national and international sensation with the development of a movie that details the dynamics of color in the nation and world. This documentary was developed by D.Channsin Berry and Actor Bill Duke. After some great grassroots marketing which included showing the movie in cities around America, Africa, the Caribbean and England the response was incredible with over 11 million hits on the site and 140,000 Facebook friends to date. The movie premiered on Oprah’s OWN network with over one million views on the introductory network showing in June 2013 clearly establishing itself as a brand in the American landscape. Director/Producer D.Channsin Berry is back with DARK GIRLS 2…Deep, Dark and Perfect Berry says… ”I’m concentrating more on the triumphs and the beauty on Dark and Light Skin Women and Girls. There will be still some stories of pain and heartache, because many Women and Young girls are still dealing with lack of self-esteem issues because of Colorism. The Big question is… How can Women and Girls get to the place of HEALING and become their higher selves? so, they make better decisions about their lives. So, the documentary film will feature REAL Women, Historians and other Professionals and their recommended procedures for moving past the pain. For example: Focusing on the here and now and not the past. Expressing your pain out loud. Making the decision to “let it go” through FORGIVENESS.” Dark Girls 2 Emotional, yes, Funny yes, Educational yes, Truthful yes…our plan is to give way to more deep rooted conversations, which could lead to healing and acceptance for women and men. The pushback against Gayle King’s interview has been huge. Then Ms. King’s good friend, Oprah Winfey, appeared on the Today show and was very emotional saying that Ms. King “is not doing well” amid the backlash she has received over her recent interview with former WNBA star Lisa Leslie following the death of Kobe Bryant, in which she asked Leslie about Bryant’s 2003 rape case. Then The Snoop Dogg pushed back against Gayle King (and Oprah) for asking about the rape allegation against Kobe Bryant and defended several high-profile accused sexual predators including Bill Cosby. Then Bill Cosby thanked Snoop Dogg for calling his freedom. ![]() In 2012, author IC Bailey found himself distraught over the effects that racism had upon his life. Reckoning with childhood abuse at the hands of a cruel child welfare system, he spent his first 16 years under a torrent of racial, sexual, physical, and mental abuse. Looking for relief from this abuse, he began having conversations with the White People around him, allowing him keen insight into the White People and their culture of Whiteness. What he did not find were any significant works sharing the perspectives of White people about the blood they had spilled and the systems they created. There were few examples of common dialogue between the oppressor and the oppressed. Conversations with White People: Dialogues About Race is the culmination of that journey to see fruitful dialogues between Black and White People. It is a truly revolutionary work. Recently, Mr. Bailey was on our show talking about Conversations with White People: Dialogues About Race. Mark Sherman is an emeritus professor of psychology at SUNY, New Paltz. After receiving his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and his PhD from Harvard (where one of his teachers was B.F. Skinner), he went on to a distinguished teaching career at the State University of New York at New Paltz. He was twice nominated for the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He took early retirement from teaching in 1995 to allow more time for his research and writing. Sherman has taught, thought, researched and written about gender issues for more than 35 years. With communications professor Adelaide Haas, Sherman did a major research project on men’s and women’s conversational styles in single-sex groups. The result was “Man to Man, Woman to Woman,” published in Psychology Today in 1984, and cited in Time magazine shortly after publication. This brief article — which discusses sources of problems in male-female communication — anticipated by six years the work of Deborah Tannen. It has been reprinted in at least two major texts for English composition classes. Sherman and Haas also published scholarly papers based on their research. In the early 1990s, Sherman became aware that boys and young men were falling behind girls and young women in school, and since that time, he has read, talked, and written about this issue extensively, including in newspaper oped pieces. Since 2010, he has had a blog on the Psychology Today website, where he has often written on the problems facing young males. His posts on these issues get many views a day. He has also written for the Good Men Project and is regular contributor to their discussions. Sherman is also a member of the Coalition for establishment of a White House Council on Boys and Men; and he recently became a member of the Advisory Board to the group (which is headed by Warren Farrell, author of The Boy Crisis). Among his many interests have been songwriting, singing, and humor. He has written regular humor column for his local paper for nearly 35 years, has produced two CDs of his songs, and has been doing a podcast, “The Kvetching Professor” for a year-and-a-half. Most important, says Mark Sherman, is that he has been happily married for nearly 50 years, is the father of three grown sons and the grandfather of five young grandsons. Recently, Mr. Sherman was live on our talking about Boys And Men Need Our Attention. Born in Detroit, raised in Westport, Connecticut and educated in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Seanne N. Murray, otherwise known as SNM, The Voice for Good aspired to be a writer from the early age of seven. She’s authored several publications including her first book, The Art of Submission, The Woman’s Guide to Fulfillment, was an editor of the Political and Civil Rights Law Review at Temple University School of Law and chaired a panel on clean drinking water at Harvard Law School. Since 2001, following the terror she endured on 9/11, she’s been devoted to exploring and understanding the interconnectedness, or oneness, as she calls it, of humanity. Seanne is the founder of Seanne N. Murray Enterprises, LLC, 90 Minutes of Solutions, The Ara Initiative and the writer, creator and executive producer of the upcoming feature film, Chicago 1919. Recently, Ms. Murray was live on our show talking about the upcoming feature film Chicago 1919. The film is about the Chicago race riot of 1919. The Chicago race riot of 1919 was a major racial conflict that began in Chicago, Illinois, on July 27, 1919, and ended on August 3. During the riot, thirty-eight people died and over five hundred were injured. It is considered the worst of the approximately 25 riots during the Red Summer, so named because of the violence and fatalities across the nation. The combination of prolonged arson, looting, and murder made it the worst race riot in the history of Illinois. During the conversation, Ms. Murray talked about: – Some of her background including her great aunt being the co-founder of Motown Records, growing up in Detroit and Connecticut, growing up in a divided family and feeling isolated You can contact Ms. Murray via: Website Visit The Dr. Vibe Show™ at https://www.thedrvibeshow.com/ Please feel free to email The Dr. Vibe Show™ at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook Fan page here God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith,
