Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease found in people who have had multiple head injuries. Symptoms may include behavioral problems, mood problems, and problems with thinking. This typically does not begin until years after the injuries. It often gets worse over time and can result in dementia. It is unclear if the risk of suicide is altered. Most documented cases have occurred in athletes involved in contact sports such as American football, wrestling, boxing, ice hockey, rugby and soccer. Other risk factors include being in the military, prior domestic violence, and repeated banging of the head. The exact amount of trauma required for the condition to occur is unknown. Definitive diagnosis can only occur at autopsy. It is a form of tauopathy. As of 2018, there is no specific treatment. Rates of disease have been found to be about 30% among those with a history of multiple head injuries. Population rates, however, are unclear. Research into brain damage as a result of repeated head injuries began in the 1920s, at which time the condition was known as dementia pugilistica or “punch drunk syndrome”. Changing the rules in some sports has been discussed as a means of prevention. Over the next few Mondays live at 9 p.m. Eastern at , The Dr. Vibe Show™ and The Good Men Project will hosting You, me & CTE. You, me & CTE is a series of conversations on and about Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Karen and Doug Zegel, are the mother and step-father of Patrick Risha, an All-Conference running back in high school and at Dartmouth College. Patrick suffered from CTE, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, before he took his own life at the age of 32. They founded the Patrick Risha CTE Awareness Foundation. Along with the informative website StopCTE.org and social media pages, the foundation works to provide parents of school age children (who have very susceptible brains) with information about the dangers of sports which involve head trauma. The foundation also works to open the avenues for brain donations for research and awareness. And the foundation is also striving to increase awareness of the prevalence of CTE in our society in ex-athletes, veterans, and victims of domestic abuse. Recently, Karen and Doug were on our show. THE DR. VIBE SHOW - WARREN CLARKE - BARBER SHOP TALK SERIES VOL. 2 - BLACK MASCULINITY - JULY 5 - 2018
Warren Clarke is the curator of the Barber Shop Talk Series. Recently, Mr. Clarke was on our show talking about the Barber Shop Talk Series Vol. 2: Black masculinity. During our conversation, Mr. Clarke talked about: – Some of his background and his journey of masculinity On Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 Barber Shop Talk Series: Black masculinity is hosting three social events in three separate cities (Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa) which explores the social development of young Black men by the women who raise them. When: Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm Where: Toronto (location: University of Toronto – Transitional Year Program, 123 St. George St. Toronto, Ontario) Montreal: Dynasty studio’s: 330 St Jacques St. Montréal, Québec Ottawa: Cultural Arts Studio: 40 Colonnade Rd. Ottawa, Ontario These events seek to understand how young Black men socially construct their masculinities in a Canadian context. Knowing that anti-Black racism and negative stereotypes exist within our Canadian societies, which impede Black men’s upward mobility, the idea is to disrupt such social norms. Building upon a previous dialogue about Black Canadian masculinities, we are encouraging positive social outcomes for Black men and boys, but also the community members they are in relation with. The purpose of three cities is to understand the lived experiences of the development of Black masculinity from an Anglo-phone and Franco-phone perspective. Guests have the opportunity to participate in our live discussions at either of the three events (maximum of 20 people). For those who are unable to attend the event, they have the opportunity to access remotely to one of the three cities of their choice. ATTENDANCE If you plan on attending the event, please note that SPACES ARE LIMITED, and priority is given on a first come first serve basis. People who are interested in the event are asked to RSVP, which will help us manage the available space. Twenty people will be accommodated in each city’s event, which allows people to speak and share opinions. You, me & CTE is a series of conversations on and about Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Cyndy Feasel, the author of After the Cheering Stops, is an elementary school art teacher in Mesquite, Texas. She grew up in the Dallas suburb of Garland and attended Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, where she met Grant Feasel, a center on the Abilene Wildcats football team. After graduation, she became a primary school teacher and married Grant, who was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1983. For the next ten years, Grant played in the NFL although he lost two seasons to knee injuries. In total, Grant played 117 games and was a three-year starter for the Seattle Seahawks. Following Grant’s retirement, the family moved back to the Dallas area, where Grant and Cyndy raised three children: Sean, Sarah, and Spencer. Grant started drinking to dull the pain that began in a brain muddled by a history of repetitive trauma and symptomatic concussions. Neither of them knew at the time that he was slowly drinking himself to death—a lingering process that took nearly twenty years. There was collateral damage: their marriage was destroyed, their three children were greatly impacted, and Cyndy was left financially reeling. All because her husband played a violent game that entertained tens of millions of football fans every Sunday. Since Grant’s death in 2012 at the age of 52, Cyndy has been sharing her story as a precautionary tale of what can happen when loved ones play a sport with inherit risks that wreak tremendous physical damage. Cyndy makes her home in the Dallas area. Her website is www.cyndyfeasel.com. These owners were good at what they did but were lost when it came to implementing certain business strategies and structures. Because of my background in business and information technology, they came to me for help, believing that I could assist them with their problems. How long have you had your dream – a year, 5 years, or 45 years? What is stopping you from going after your dream – time, family or money? Once upon a time, there was young Jamaican American girl from Manhattan who traveled all the way to University Park, Pennsylvania to meet the love of her life (a native Hollis, Queens resident). Where does the story go from here? Currently, the book is still being written. For the thirteen plus years shared together they have each accomplished quite a bit for a couple in their thirties. A licensed attorney by trade, Natasha held various stints in the corporate world prior to making a foray into fashion and writing. Having been a victim of bullying as a child growing up, Natasha learned to seek out fashion as a source of strength early on and actively uses it as a personal means of empowerment; because of her own experiences with bullying and her strong desire to help others within the plus size community, Natasha started Dressing Room 8 to provide a web-based resource where women can gain personal and professional empowerment through her fashion and lifestyle focused blog, consultation and coaching services. Dressing Room 8 helps women how to think with clarity, dress with confidence, and live with purpose. Kahlil Nurse is an Electrical Engineer who wears many different hats (just like his wife). He is the Tech Guru for too many people to mention (which his friends and family can totally attest to). He has been the technical support for Dressing Room 8 and Sistas On Fire. As a fan of cars, technology and finance, he embraces opportunities to learn, grow, and enjoy his hobbies to the fullest. In September 2017, they decided to share their marriage and thoughts to media with their exciting new podcast WokeNFree where they talk about relationships, education, religion, politics, music, history, fashion, diversity in the media, entertainment, empowerment matters, life hacks, technology, cultural disparities in the world, and everything in between. You can listen to a new WokeNFree episode every Wednesday for #WokeNFreeWednesday. Recently, Kahlil and Natasha were on our show talking about WokeNFree podcast. THE DR. VIBE SHOW - EMILLE BRYANT - THE SELF-DIRECTED LIFE - IT'S DEFINTION AND INFLUENCES - FEBRUARY 19 - 2018
Emille M. Bryant is the author of Start With A Sparkle and the innovator of Brazen Creativity. As an author and innovator, Emille tirelessly seeks ways to share his insight into leadership, motivation, self-development and creativity. He is a passionate advocate of independent thinking and believes America’s edge in business, conflict resolution, military engagement and humanitarian endeavors is in its ability to draw on multiple perspectives and points of view at will. His engagement requires a level of in-depth thinking and willingness to confront personal and collective fears that unlock the power of an individual and organization. Emille is a natural problem solver. While in the Air Force, he had to see beyond the problems presented by a lack of resources, austere locations and must-do mission. Daily, he was surrounded by Airmen, both young and old, whose dedication and professionalism were his greatest assets. By listening, learning and then sharing his insight, he led multiple teams to amazing success, turning around two organizations that were headed down the wrong path. When faced with a chance to solve problems while deployed, Emille led his teams to unprecedented success, breaking records in the number of missions supported and the reliability of the aircraft entrusted to his care. During his military career, Emille was stationed at six locations between the US, Portugal and Japan, settling in the Washington DC area after his retirement from active duty in 2012. Pope Air Force Base, NC, where both of his children were born (1994 – 1998), Maxwell Air Force Base, AL (1998 – 2001), Lajes Field, Azores (2001 – 2003), Yokota Air Base, Japan (2003 – 2005), Dyess Air Force Base, TX (2006 – 2008) and Andrews Air Force Base, MD (2008 – Present). He has deployed to southwest Asia in support of ongoing operations as well as numerous countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. Sparked by a desire to share the wisdom he gained over 24 years in uniform, Emille released his first book, entitled Start With A Sparkle, in September 2014 which transformed his life. Writing fulfilled the first element of his powerful vision to share the concept of IKIGAI—a Japanese word that translates to “the reason why you wake up each morning”. This powerful concept changed the trajectory of every aspect of his life. Focusing on IKIGAI unlocked Emille’s creative potential, especially while working to build the small business that employed him at the time. Because that position was open to innovation, Emille flourished. Combining his military experience and logistics prowess with focused team-building and communication, Emille helped build a Center of Excellence from the ground up. While working in corporate America, Emille traveled the United States to launch his book. He shared it on a nationwide tour going from Seattle to Atlanta, eight cities in total, speaking in libraries, cafes and classrooms. From that experience, he learned that a book was not enough…people were clamoring for interactive content and something they could access on the web. After speaking with hundreds of people from all across America, Emille saw the need to help people express both their IKIGAI and their creativity. Thus was born his latest project, Awaken to Brazen Creativity. Brazen Creativity is a lifestyle that emphasizes no adult needs any human being’s permission be their best self and that being one’s best leads to original thought and unmatched innovation. Awaken to Brazen Creativity is the first salvo in an ongoing effort to highlight the power of IKIGAI in creativity, it will encourage the learner to shed the restrictions offered by society, family and social convention that prevent each of us from tapping into and offering our best ideas on behalf of our work, home and financial endeavors. After serving for many years in government and corporate America, Emille made a decision to harness his expertise to build Emille Bryant Presents, his newest business venture highlighting his work as an author, speaker and innovator. For more information on his published work, Start With A Sparkle, or his latest web series, Awaken to Brazen Creativity, visit www.emillebryantpresents.com. THE DR. VIBE SHOW - ROBIN KOERNER - THE CURE OF TOXIC MASCULINITY IS REAL MASCULINITY - FEBRUARY 5 - 2018
Robin Koerner is a political and economic commentator for the Huffington Post, Independent Voter Network, and other outlets. He holds graduate degrees in both Physics and the Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge (U.K.). He is British born, and recently became a citizen of the USA. A decade ago, he founded WatchingAmerica.com, an organization of over 200 volunteers that translates and posts in English views about the USA from all over the world. Robin may be best known for having coined the term “Blue Republican” to refer to liberals and independents who joined the GOP to support Ron Paul’s bid for the presidency in 2012 (and, in so doing, launching the largest coalition that existed for that candidate). Robin’s current work as the author of the book If You Can Keep It and as a trainer and a consultant focuses on bringing people together across political divisions, with a view to winning supporters for good causes, rather than just arguments. He is driven by the conviction that more unites us as people and as Americans than divides us as partisans, and if we can find common ground and understand the forces that really drive political change, then “We the People” will be able to do what the Founders implored us to do – maintain our natural rights against power and its abuse. As he says, people and their well-being are the only legitimate ends of politics. Recently, Mr. Koerner was on our show talking about his article The Cure for Toxic Masculinity Is Real Masculinity.
