With 2010 coming to an end, we thought that we talk and share about some of the stories that we thought were of interest to Black men in 2010. This episode not only was the start of our year in review but it was the start of a new feature for the show. For a while, we had a vision of doing regular podcasts with Black Canadian and Black American men discuss various issues that they feel are important. Well, this episode is the start of this journey. In this episode, we have Colin Jobe of "Colin's Edge" (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/colinsedge ) and "The Cutting Edge" on CHRY FM (http://www.chry.fm/ ) and Brandon Frame "The Black Man Can"at http://theblackmancan.org/ In this episode, we start off discussing about LeBron James leaving Cleveland and "taking his talents to Miami". Everyone had a take on this story. We then move onto talking about about Blacks in sports. If you would like to read a good book about Blacks and athletics, please check out: "40 Million Dollar Slaves: ; The Rise, The Fall and Redemption Of The Fall Of The Black Athlete" by William C. Roden Renowned "New York Times" columnist Rhoden deconstructs the black athlete in this explosive and absorbing discussion of race, politics, and the history of American sports. He argues that for all their money and fame, black athletes are no better off than slaves whose masters forced them to race and fight. Feel free to email us at info@blackcanadianman.com. Jason "Blockz" Allard knows the meaning of dusting off and trying again. ; Growing up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Blockz" was interested in two things as a child - basketball and music. Blockz struggled in school and often felt bored and uninterested in what he was doing. Blockz only began to excel once he was given the opportunity to perform at his annual school talent shows, and started to fall in love with what music had to offer him. He began to record music at his friend's house - the only place he had access to turntables and a mic - and shortly afterward formed a group by the name of Black Soldiers in 2000. The rest is musical history. "Blockz" shares about his growing up years, his relationship with his parents, how his musical journey started and where it is taking him and his thoughts about the challenges that young Black men are facing. Blockz released his first hit single "YEAH" the summer of 2010 which will be followed by an EP in the near future. Blockz is paving a new path for the international hip hop and r and b scene with his powerful lyrics and rhyming style. Jamaican born Playwright, Producer and Actor David Heron has been called one of the most successful Caribbean artists of the last decade. He first came to the attention of Jamaican theatre audiences as a playwright, with the runaway success of his first play "Ecstasy", which ran for two years and toured three continents, emerging as one of the most popular Jamaican plays ever. Since then he has penned five more stage plays, all of which have earned him great commercial and critical acclaim in his homeland and internationally- "Intermission" , "Against His Will" , "Love and Marriage and New York City", "Redemption" and "4PLAY" . The 2006 revival of the show at The Billie Holiday Theatre in New York was nominated for the prestigious AUDELCO Award, New York's highest accolade for Off Broadway Black Theater. That production then triumphed as an Official Selection of the 2007 National Black Theatre Festival held in Winston Salem North Carolina in August, 2007.Heron is only the second Jamaican playwright, after Trevor Rhone, to have his work showcased at the festival, one of the largest in the world."Love and Marriage and New York City" went on to enjoy a highly successful limited run in Toronto, Canada in May of 2008, where Heron made the cover of PRIDE Magazine, of the nation's foremost Black publications. As an actor, Heron's credits include "Ecstasy", "Intermission", "Love and Marriage and New York City", (in Jamaica, Britain and Off Broadway) the US regional production of the Broadway hit "Cheaters and Redemption" (Jamaica and US regional tour).Migrating to the USA, he immediately received high praise for his role as Friday in the World Premiere production of "Robinson Crusoe" at the prestigious Orlando Shakespeare Festival in 2006, and played Hotspur in "H", a modern day adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 at the Bric Studios, New York.In 2007, he made his Shakespearean debut as Laertes in Take Wing and Soar's critically acclaimed production of "Hamlet" at The Workshop Theater Off Broadway, and received excellent notices for his role as Prince in The New Federal Theater's revival of Errol John's classic Caribbean drama, "Moon On A Rainbow Shawl".In 2008, he earned further critical acclaim for his performance as The Messenger in the Off Broadway revival of "Medea" at the National Black Theater in Harlem, as well as in Othello and "The Taming of The Shrew" at The Virginia Shakespeare Festival. In 2009, he appeared in the Off Broadway premiere of John Patrick Shay's acclaimed drama, "Trickster At The Gate", as Harlem Jazz musician Roy "Lucky" Luckwood. In August of 2006, Heron received one of the highest accolades of his career when the City Council of New York honored him with a Proclamation and Award at City Hall, in recognition of his "Outstanding theatrical career and his invaluable contribution to the betterment of society."He is a proud member of the Actors Equity Association and The Jamaica Association of Dramatic Artists. In this episode we interview author of the book, "Detox", Vidal Chavannes. Vidal talks and shares with us his growing up in Toronto, how "Detox" became a reality and some of his influences. Here is a description of "Detox":"There are books about unrest, tensions that run through a community, and solutions for these conditions. In "Detox", by social observer and activist Vidal Chavannes, readers are pulled into the history, psychology, and culture of the Black community. An edgy and sometimes painful narration, Chavannes shares his frustration and occasional rage at the combination of conditions that foment increased conflict in a community already struggling for acceptance...and survival. Spurred by the tragedy that became known as Bloody Sunday, when four young Black men were gunned down by other young Black men in the City of Toronto, Chavannes considers the causes and implications of this terrible event, and explores the attitudes and behaviours of local educators and police, and all those factions struggling to deal with a diverse, possibly explosive, and potentially dynamic environment."Vidal was born in and is a resident of Greater Toronto. Not only is he a book author but he is an educator, activist and a motivational speaker. Jumoke (pronounced Joo-MOH-keh) is a Nigerian word which means "Everyone Loves The Child. "Camp Jumoke was founded in 1994 by The Association for the Advancement of Blacks in Health Sciences (AABHS) and is dedicated to enriching the lives of children who have Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). In its first year of operation, 40 children attended the camp for two weeks. The continuing mandate of the Camp Jumoke Organization is to better serve the needs of hundreds of children across Canada afflicted with Sickle Cell Disease. Your contributions help send kids to a camp where they can participate in outdoor activities, develop lifelong memories and relationships, enhance their self-esteem, create support networks and so much more.In this episode, we talk and share with Yvonne Clarke, Events Director for Camp Jumoke. She talks a little about herself and a lot about Camp Jumoke. Each year since its inception in 1994, Camp Jumoke has held a walk-a-thon to raise the necessary funds to send children with Sickle Cell Disease to summer camp. Camp Jumoke receives no government funding. Therefore, it is primarily supported by private and corporate donations. The annual Camp Jumoke walk-a-thon is an entire day of family-oriented events featuring celebrities, live entertainment, children's activities, vendors, refreshments and free giveaways. Thanks to the City of Toronto, we are able to hold all of these festivities in the park behind the provincial legislative building. The Camp Jumoke walk-a-thon is a lively procession through the streets of downtown Toronto and attracts participants from the Greater Toronto Area, surrounding areas and across North America .At last year's walk-a-thon, thousands of dollars were raised by more than 1,500 individual donations and corporate sponsorships.
