Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them. On the November 15, 2020 edition of Black Canada Talking™, our guest was Wayne Harris. Wayne is known for his ability to understand people and their situations by leveraging emotional and cultural intelligence. He has cultivated this edge through thousands of hours of training and development over three decades and loves to pay it forward. Originally from Montréal, Québec, he is committed to uplifting Black families and their communities from coast to coast. Wayne has coached and mentored teens and adults in basketball, after school programs and career paths, with a special passion for connecting with young Black men from single-parent homes like his own. Since moving to the Greater Toronto Area in 1990, Wayne has supported folks of all ages in customizing their value to the market and positioning themselves to win. He has also developed young adult programming at the City of North York, The Citizen’ Strong. Wayne is also a proud and longstanding teacher of personal economics for Junior Achievement of Canada. The majority of his professional background has been based in Information Technology, with 22 years of experience in Cybersecurity technology and solutions for the Canadian, US, and Caribbean markets. Today he works in the Financial Services industry helping families and businesses optimize their succession planning and estates. Wayne holds a Postgraduate Degree in Business Administration from the University of Leicester and several IT Security related certifications. He is also a licensed insurance agent and a certified coach with the Certified Coaches Federation. He been married to his college sweetheart Angie for over 25 years and has two adult children in university. Recently, Wayne was on our show talking about Financial Literacy And The Black Family. Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company. As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education. Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy. Jill Jones is our special guest for this conversation. Ms. Jones is activist, feminist, former collaborator with Paisley Park. The Real Dads™ Network is the outgrowth of the award winning documentary Real Dads – Black Men on Fatherhood (2000) which included commentary by the late Ossie Davis and was directed by Derek Phillips and Nikki Dees. The purpose of the documentary was to show positive black fathers who were actively involved in the nurturing and the raising of their children. As a result of the documentary, it became evident that there was a STRONG NEED for an organization where fathers could: – Tell there stories and share their experiences Thus in 2004, the Real Dads™ Network was founded by Derek Phillips. The mission of the Real Dads™ Network is: Create a culture where all the fathers are actively involved in the parenting process, and are portrayed and viewed as exemplary role models by society. The mission of Real Dads™ Network is to: – Strengthen the institution of the Family by recognizing and promoting positive aspects of fatherhood in all media. Derek Phillips is the founder and Executive Director of Real Dads™ Network, an organization that is committed to strengthening the institution of the family by promoting the positive aspects of fatherhood in the media. It is their belief that children do better, both developmentally and in the attainment of life opportunities, when both parents are actively involved in parenting, regardless of the marital or living circumstances. He is also the founder and President of Jorma Productions, an independent production company (affectionately named after his two daughters) that is committed to creating projects and programs that are educational, inspiring and empowering. The guest on the November 1, 2020 edition of Black Canada Talking™ was Dr. Rosemary Sadlier. Dr. Rosemary Sadlier is a historian, author, educator and Black History expert based in Toronto, Ontario Canada. Among her publications: Harriet Tubman (Dundurn Press), and The Kids Book of Black Canadian History (KidsCanPress). She was the consultant and writer/contributor to Black History: Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas (EMP) She completed her course work for her doctorate at OISE, University of Toronto. Rosemary is an expert on the history of African Canadians and has been interviewed on numerous media outlets including CTV, CBC News Network, CBC syndicated radio, TVO, Radio Canada International, CITYtv, CP24, WNED and PBS, Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Sun, Share Newspaper, Pride Newspaper and the Caribbean Camera. She has presented across Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean. Her recent writing concerning Black History related matters included a monthly column for Inside Toronto; book chapters for a publication on The Ward; and the Black Canadian Network Facebook site. Rosemary is available for speaking engagements, short-term contracts, to consult and provide interviews on all aspects of Black History, Black Women, the Black experience and social justice. Among her recent accomplishments, she organized the national Canadian Black History Summit (April 2016); partnered with Councillor Paula Fletcher for the commemoration of the William Peyton Hubbard Park (Oct 2016); the historic recognition of Lincoln Alexander and Kay Livingstone; successfully planned the South African and Black Canadian Network reception (Nov 2016). Her patience and persistence resulted with a commemorative plaque for the AME Church site – Toronto (Dec. 2016) and the submission of the Parliamentary Petition for August 1st Emancipation Day (2018). Ryan Oneil Knight has built multiple businesses over the last 10 years and spends a great deal of his time leading and mentoring young entrepreneurs. After starting Detailing Knights, a mobile waterless car cleaning company, Ryan was able to launch his first youth entrepreneurship program called Knighthood Academy. Knighthood Academy was designed to help at risk youth in the community develop their leadership skills through an entrepreneurship bootcamp. Various youth with multiple barriers have accessed the program ranging from high school drop outs, past gang members, and those recently released from detention. “I have realized that entrepreneurship is a tool that gives a level playing field to all those that want to partake. I envision helping youth all over the world experience entrepreneurship at least once during their learning journey. To this end Ryan is an active board member with the Peel Learning Foundation. Helping to bring alternative resources to youth in the Peel District School Board. Ryan has been named one of Brampton’s top 40 under 40 and twice nominated for a Business Excellence Award by the Brampton Board of Trade in 2014 and 2019. In 2013, Ryan won the Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year award from the Toronto Region Board of Trade. Ryan has a deep passion for his community and is one of the cofounders of the Afro Caribbean Business Network. A non profit organization created to help entrepreneurs of African and Caribbean heritage (ACH) to not only start businesses but help their companies grow and become assets for future generations. Along with the vision of helping youth in every city around the world experience entrepreneurship, he is bringing years of startup expertise, award-winning youth work, marketing, advertising, and business operations. Knight is a current contributor on CFRB NewsTalk1010 appearing each Monday morning with host Jerry Agar to address current affairs from a African and Caribbean heritage business owner perspective. Ryan is an avid community advocate and devoted family man married to Cherriton and they have two wonderful children Jasmine and Christian. Recently, Ryan was on our show talking about the ACBN MicroLoan Fund In Collaboration with Alterna Savings Credit Union. Donovan McKenzie is a community mental health advocate with special interest in men's issues. He has spent years helping people to challenge ideas about what it means to be a man. Donovan has turned his pain into purpose. He has and will continue to rewrite the narrative for what it means to be a man struggling with mental health, and Heart of a Man here to help others do the same Donovan’s experience with depression and PTSD has made him passionate about ending the stigma. By sharing his story in a vulnerable and creative way, he challenges listeners to shift perspectives and develop the courage to reach out for help. He founded Heart of a Man to offer an alternative and the organization is making an impact in our community. Recently, Donovan was on our show.
