Our this episode of STUFF, Dr. Vibe and Ms. Keyes hosted the conversation Is Education Still The Great Equalizer For Blacks?. The special guest for this conversation tonight was Dr. Marvin Thompson. Dr. Marvin Thompson is an educational leader who has spent the majority of his 25 years in the educational field turning around schools in challenged communities. The scope of his experiences in schools range from pre-school director, elementary teacher to district superintendent. In 2003, his efforts led to his school being recognized as one of the top 15 most changed schools in America through the National School Change Award Program. He served on the Virginia Academic Review Steering Committee, which reviewed, revised and developed school performance standards which are currently being used in states across America. He has served on Governor Mark Warner’s Economic Development committees and Governor Tim Kane’s early childhood committee. As the Chief Academic Officer of a charter school in New Orleans, Dr. Thompson was featured in Oprah Winfrey’s Blackboard Wars, a nationally televised documentary bringing light to the challenges facing urban schools in America. The program received many awards including CableFax’s Best Documentary, The CINE Golden Eagle Award and the New York Festival’s TV and Film Award. Dr. Thompson has many televison and radio apprearances including the CBS Morning News, The Tavis Smiley Show, LA Today, and CNN: Headline News as an educational commentator. In 2013, he was a speaker at the Steve Harvey Mentoring Camp for Boys and the Indiana Black Expo. Dr. Thompson was most recently an invited guest of the White House to speak at the 2015 Congressional Black Caucus Convention in Washington, D.C., to discuss the challenges facing boys in challenged communities. Currently Dr. Thompson is the President and CEO of EmpowerED, and educational Consulting firm specializing in organizational systems development. His company has worked with schools across America from rural districts to some of the largest and most challenged such as the Los Angeles Unified School District. In 2009, Dr. Thompson was an invited member of the International Exchange of Scholars to assist the University of South Africa, the 4th largest university in the world, in revising its educational curriculum. These efforts will influence over fifty percent of the teacher workforce in the continent of Africa. Dr. Thompson received his Ed.D. degree in Leadership & Policy Studies from The George Washington University, an M.ED in Administration & Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Psychology and Education from Randolph Macon College in Virginia. In observance of Black Mental Health Awareness Month, G.R.I.O.T. are continuing their series of symposiums, Tackling the Taboo. In this series, we touch on issues that often go ignored within the Black community (especially issues related to Black males). These events are meant to raise awareness and help the community and the members of it. In this installment, G.R.I.O.T. will be discussing Black Mental Health issues facing our Black Male Community. This event is being moderated by Dr. Richard Hanzy, who will be joined by several black male thought leaders such as Dr. Lamont Francies, former SF Police Captain Cornelius Johnson, and Author LeRon Barton. Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve is Assistant Professor at Temple University in the Department of Criminal Justice, with courtesy appointments in the Department of Sociology and the Beasley School of Law. Steven Kiges (pron. Key-jez) is the co-founder and director of The Coach Training Academy. The Coach Training Academy is a professional, International Coach Federation accredited coach training school. Graduates have gone on to both build very successful solo coaching practices as well as taking their coaching skills to corporate positions including Microsoft, Google, and NASA, just to name a few. Steve is a is an experienced Master coach with over 5000 coaching hours and over 10,000 hours mentoring people that want to become exceptional coaches or as he puts it “artistic agents of change”. To the coaching world, he brings both his own past struggles of growing up in a very dysfunction home, depressed, suicidal and at one point topping the scales at over 410 pounds. After leaving music he then went on to build one of the largest Dental Software companies in North America and after selling that, followed his life’s passion of helping others. Meme Kelly has a B.A. from UCLA and a MFA in playwriting from The University of California, Riverside. She’s a producer and author of four plays and the author of three self-published books and two eBooks, which have been sold nationally at Barnes and Noble and on Amazon. She was a Distinquished Dean’s Fellow for a MFA in Creative Writing and Creative Writing for Performing Arts and a Gluck Foundation Fellow at The University of California, Riverside. As a Gluck Fellow, Meme introduced over 200 elementary school children to theater arts. She’s also passionate about serving homeless women and young adults with disabilities and has served in a non-profit for many years. She is a contributor for Huffpost and writes about anything that tugs at her heart. She recently completed her first short film, Out of Bounds, and it’s receiving rave reviews. Out of Bounds received sponsorship awards from The University of California Graduate Division, from The Film and Theater Arts Department, and from The School of Interdisciplinary Studies. The short was inspired by a TV pilot script with the same name that was selected as a top 10 semi-finalist out of 175 scripts in UCLA Film School’s Samuel Goldwyn contest. The University of California, Riverside also recommended it for a Humanitas Prize, www.humanitasprize.org . She is the mother of three wonderful sons and her oldest, who has been a miracle in her life, is autistic; She’s been married to her UCLA college sweetheart for a very long time. Music industry veteran Paul Porter has released the book Blackout, an explosive look at the corruption running rampant in the music industry.
