Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company.

As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education.

Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy.

Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

The guest on the November 22, 2020 edition of Black Canada Talking™ was Donna Paris.

Donna Paris is, among many things, an artist, an educator, a counselor, a mom, and a grandmother. She is a multigenerational African Candian, born and raised in Nova Scotia but has called Toronto home for the past 37 years. She has recently retired from a career as a teacher with the Toronto District School Board.

Donna believes that it’s important to know our history – who came before and what it cost them. She knows that in order for us to move forward in our lives and reclaim the brilliant, powerful, Black beings who came into this world, we need to tell our stories. It’s only in going back that we truly get to have our present self.

Donna is a collector of stories. She believes that black history is forged by the lives, stories, and varied experiences of Black people. Her goal is to provide a platform for Black Canadians to share their rich history. A history that is often not included in the history books or in school curriculum. She wants to hold space for Black people to share their tales of racism and discrimination, as well as the stories that demonstrate the strength and determination that helped them stand strong and claim their place in Canadian history.

Donna also believes it’s important that we be the ones telling our stories. #OurVoicesOurStories.

During our conversation, Donna talked about:

– Some of her background and going to Dalhousie University, struggling growing up with Black people and having a Black identity
– Moving from Halifax to Toronto
– Her career in teaching
– The story behind In The Black Canada and her passion for storytelling
– The first person she interviewed
– The challenge with Black Canadians sharing their stories and some stories from her journey
– A story that impacted her
– Her message about Black Canadian history to non-black and Black Canadians and her message for Black Canadians for 2021

Jill Jones is our special guest for this conversation. Ms. Jones is activist, feminist, former collaborator with Paisley Park.

During the December 3, 2020 edition of Staggers State Of Things, the ladies talked tonight are:

– 45’s pardons
– Are the progressive left going to sabotage the Biden-Harris administration?
– Obama: Criminal justice reformers ‘lost a big audience’ with defund the police rhetoric
– Growing tragedy around virus and vaccine
– The status of a stimulus package and the congressional hearings being held about it
