Ain’t Your Mama’s Heat Wave is a stand-up comedy special from the frontlines of the climate crisis. It’s filmed in the St. Paul’s district of Norfolk, VA, a Black public housing community that is being redeveloped because of climate flooding, sea-level rise, and a legacy of racist urban policies. The city of Norfolk, which is below sea level and sinking, is grappling with the climate crisis and racial injustice. Four Black millennial stand-up comedians, hailing from Virginia Beach, Atlanta, Chicago, and Ohio, take the stage to “make the climate crisis funny” in front of a St. Paul’s audience who are at risk for a Hurricane Katrina-like disaster and who are currently being displaced from their homes. Ain’t Your Mama’s Heat Wave screened at the Planet in Focus 22nd International Environmental Film Festival, that ran in Toronto from October 14-24, 2021. Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them. On today’s edition of Black Canada Talking™, the scheduled guest is: Robert Small. Artist Robert Small has revolutionized the celebration of Black History Month in Canada through his art. For over a quarter of a decade, Small’s art has been featured in a poster he creates called LEGACY. Distributed annually, the poster has educated millions about the history, contributions and accomplishments of African-Canadians. Small is a self-taught artist who has merged his artistic talent, skills as an entrepreneur and teaching degree to demonstrate the power of art and conviction. Small has had many historical accomplishments. In both 2007 and 2021, Small’s artwork was displayed in banks across Canada and the only African-Canadian artist to accomplish this. For over ten years, his art has been featured on the side of a building in downtown Toronto. In an era of success being measured by visibility on social platforms, Small maintains a vibrant presence there as well with media clips on major television outlets that have been viewed over 100,000 times. Throughout his career, Small has been interviewed by such major media outlets as The Toronto Star, The Toronto Sun, CBC, City TV and Rogers. With all of these accomplishments, Small’s artwork has even permeated the transit system in Toronto by being displayed as part of an anti-racism campaign in over twenty subway stations. Along with these accomplishments, Small’s artwork continues to be the centerpiece of Black History Month celebrations by appearing in thousands of schools across the country. Small will be historically remembered as the most significant visual artist of the last two decades and the future offers more accomplishments to come. What makes Small a Black entrepreneur to watch in the future is his merging of art, education, black history and emerging trends. Small has ambitions to create Black history-oriented Alexa skills, expanding on his present catalogue of Afrocentric activity books for children, writing a book and creating NFT artwork. The future offers Small boundless opportunities for his limitless ability. Recently, Robert was on Black Canada Talking™. Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them. Our guests on the April 11, 2021 episode of Black Canada Talking™ were Richard Miller and Rachel Xyminis-Chen of Keep6ix. Keep6ix is a not-for-profit Toronto based organization, serving the Greater Toronto Area, that was founded in 2017 to make a meaningful difference in the lives of at risk youth from racialized communities who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Keep6ix offers various programs and services to help youth avoid going down a disempowering path towards incarceration. We also support and advocate for those who are currently incarcerated and provide post-release support so that they can overcome barriers and begin to pasitively re-build their lives within the community. Keep6ix’s vision is to … – Support criminalized and racialized communities to attain positivity and break the odds. Keep6ix’s mission is to … – Provide holistic and integrated capacity-building programs to youth involved in the justice system. Richard Miller is the Founder of Keep6ix and a driven community leader, dedicated to assisting underserved youth. After experiencing and witnessing misrepresentation, racism, corruption, and injustices experienced by black youth and minorities, Richard decided to establish Keep6ix. It is his passion to bring healing to individuals who have been through traumatic experiences, by ensuring resources and programming are available to prevent incarceration. Richard is an experienced and savvy entrepreneur, who believes in training and developing the next generation of young professionals. He believes that with a second chance, and the right opportunities present, our young people can thrive and become successful. As a street involved youth, Rachel saw many of her friends & partner fall into the entrapment of the criminal justice system. Supporting her partner through his federal incarceration, was the turning point for her when she experienced firsthand the struggles of supporting an incarcerated loved one. As a young man, Samuel William Burwell spent most of his time on set on set of his father’s radio show; watching as his father wrote, edited and produced his own content, all based on serving others. Dr. Paul Miller is the Principal and CEO of Green Tech High Charter School, a highly successful school for boys in Albany, NY. An expert in urban education, Dr. Miller has specialized in school reform and redesign for over 20 years, counseling school officials and administrators on effective strategies to increase performance among black males and establish a culture of success. He has committed his life to educating and empowering low-income urban youth with the intention to facilitate change and undo the trend of academic underachievement that often plagues young black men from the inner city. The passion did not begin with his professional career, but was implanted in him as a youth growing up in the projects of Rochester, NY. Similar to many of his students, Dr. Miller understands the challenges that often knock young minority men off-course and hinder their ability to reach their full potential. However, he teaches students not to be victims, but to use adversity as fuel to succeed and rise above their circumstances. Since taking over Green Tech in 2012, Dr. Miller has turned the school into one of the best in New York State. Under his leadership, graduation rates have soared – reaching an impressive 95% with a 100% college acceptance rate for graduates. In addition, students have earned over $25 million in scholarships, compared to only $200,000 before he arrived. Dr. Miller has been recognized by the City of Albany as a Man of Valor, and as one of the top 40 Under 40 African American Leaders by the City of Rochester, among many other accomplishments. He is often invited to speak to students and to offer strategic counsel to school leaders on improving school systems and more effectively engaging students. Dr. Miller has emerged as one of the top and most highly sought after urban education leaders in the nation. Jeff Miller and Shawn Fry are both dads who’s mission is to change lives. As a parent of a child with Autism, Jeff has created Potentia workforce to help individuals such as his son find the right job when he is looking. With over 85% of neurodivese individuals being underemployed in the US, Potentia works with to help expand a organization’s neurodiversity programs. At 42, Shawn was diagnosed with autism. He sold his first business business to VC two years ago and helped launch Potentia. During COVID, Shawn and the team at Potentia created the Potentia Health Registry to open schools. Jeff Miller has spent more than two decades in leadership roles in the human capital industry. He was president of a $350m recruitment firm, Cenergy Partners, which provided over 2,000 engineers and field workers to industries including energy, aerospace, manufacturing and technology. Jeff had full responsibility for day-to-day operations of this international firm, reporting to the board of directors, and successfully completed four acquisitions during his tenure. Earlier in his career, Jeff was division president for Exxova, an Atlantabased technology consultancy where he built and led the firm’s largest division in providing innovative solutions to the healthcare industry. Jeff was also a Sr. Vice president for KBR, an $88 EPC where he built and ran the firm’s fastest growing division. He also served as Vice President, Americas for NES, a global recruitment firm, where he built and led an international team responsible for record-setting results. Jeff has launched and led organizations, divisions and teams in the 20 largest markets in North America, as well as in Europe, Asia and Australia. A native of the Boston area, Jeff remains a loyal Red Sox fan and highly limited former athlete. He lives in the Houston area with his wife Samantha, and son Charlie – an awesomely cool teenager on the autism spectrum. Shawn Fry, became a successful executive and entrepreneur after being diagnosed with Asperger’s at age 42. He found success in his professional career only after he was afforded the opportunity as the CIO of several hospital systems to exercise a great deal of autonomy in his role. Shawn’s propensity for detail, hard questions and divergent solutions produced millions in both new revenue opportunity and cost savings for his employer. His innovative approach to the complexity of healthcare data laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial healthcare technology firms centered around analytics, revenue cycle and clinical informatics. Through these ventures, he left corporate America behind, hired nearly 150 employees and created his own “neurodiverse workplace culture”. Shawn found that by cultivating an environment dependent upon open, honest dialogue, clear communication and vulnerability, the workplace culture was more supportive and accommodating to everyone’s needs. People were happier, more productive and turnover rates were 0% after nearly 15 years. Shawn is a holder of multiple technology patents which he utilized to create dozens of healthcare analytics platforms. He remains a well-respected speaker and author on critical healthcare issues. Shawn sold his company to private equity in 2019 and has dedicated the rest of his life to embracing neurodiversity and the powers it unlocks through thought leadership, personal security and self esteem in one’s uniqueness. During our conversation, Jeff and Shawn talked about: – Some background about Potentia, how they met and how they help the neurodiverse community You can find out more about Jeff and Shawn here. Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly is hosted by V. Sheree Williams, the publisher of Cuisine Noir Magazine and Dr. Vibe. Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly are in depth conversations with people who have been featured in Cuisine Noir Magazine. Recently, Andrea Lacy was on Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. Andrea is the CEO of Luv’s Brownies. Andrea Lacy established Luv’s Brownies in October 1996, first preparing her delicious morsels in her apartment and then moving to a professional kitchen as sales grew. Her story begins while attending San Jose State University, Aundrea struggled with algebra classes. She failed the same math class five times. Her counselor advised her to work with the Disability Resource Center and get tested for a learning disability. She was diagnosed with dyslexia. But prior to discovering that she had dyslexia — during her first semester at SJSU, as a thank you gift she baked a friend some brownies. At the time she noticed the dough was thick but baked the brownies anyway. She revisited the brownie recipe and realized she transposed some numbers in her ingredients list without knowing she had dyslexia. Aundrea’s belief is some detriments are true blessings in disguise. Luv’s Brownies come in 14 flavors including rocky road, peanut butter brownie s’more, coconut caramel, and mint chip, and they are sold online and shipped nationwide. The company has been featured in magazines such as Rachel Ray, Essence, and Ebony — and Aundrea has been featured on the cover of Black Enterprise magazine. She is also the author of Brownie Points: Seven Steps to Success for Woman Entrepreneurs from One Who Made It! Luv’s Brownies®, Home of the Original Heart-Shaped Brownie®, and Luv Bites® (bite-sized heart-shaped brownies) are all registered trademarks of the Luv’s Brownies company. Luv’s Brownies is an LLC.
