Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company. As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education. Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy. ![]() Leisa Washington is the first Canadian female WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) agent. This accomplishment is a monumental notch in the ‘legacy-in-progress’ of a woman who understands the importance of building and nurturing relationships, as well as fostering opportunities and growth for those who need it. Those who know and work with Leisa say that she is a woman of integrity who has a lot of compassion for people – especially kids and youth. In the last few years, Leisa has managed to transform her benevolent nature into founding Camda Sports Foundation Canada –– an organization dedicated to funding underprivileged children and their families in recreational sports, while also providing financial assistance so they can have the same opportunities and access to Education, Arts and Music programs that other kids/youth in mid to high income families and neighborhoods have. Leisa is very passionate about the principal mandates of Camda – Sports, Education, and Arts & Music (S.E.A.M). Leisa was recently honored by NABFEME (National Association of Black Female Executives in Media & Entertainment). The Toronto charter of NABFEME hosted an event to honor her She is also the Manager, Member Services at the new state-of-the-art Abilities Centre in Whitby, Ontario where she manages the customer service and sales department. She works with the Abilities Centre to enrich the quality of life for individuals of all ages and abilities through an inclusive environment. Leisa was also Ontario Liberal Candidate, Whitby (2018) and launched her sports agency, the MPP Sports Group in August 2018. Recently, Ms. Washington was on our show. Veronica Stephen is a resident of Ward 19 (Toronto) and a lifelong East-ender who is connected to the community. Beaches-East York is where she spent many seasons committed to my health and love for athletics, and is home to her childhood congregation where she presently volunteers in the nourishment community kitchen and food bank. It is also where she supports local businesses and enjoy indulging in culinary experiences at some of the best restaurants in the City. Ms. Stephen has spent over 10 years working for the City of Toronto, with experience in Parks, Forestry and Recreation; Court Services; and Employment and Social Services divisions. I have not only done so with the intended purpose to learn, but with my eyes and ears open, and an extended hand and a welcoming smile. Ms. Stephen is running for City Council to ensure that the needs of the community are served, to provide the resources to keep residents safe, create change and to improve the overall livability of our community.
