Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company. As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education. Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy. Ms. Jones is an activist, feminist, and a former collaborator with Paisley Park. ![]() In Canada, National Emancipation Day is coming (August 1, 2021) as Dr. Lynn Jones, an African Nova Scotia leader, educator, community activist and trade unionist, blows the whistle to start the 2021 virtual Toronto Underground Freedom train ride at 10:54 p.m. on July 31st. Each and everyone is welcome to join the annual Toronto Freedom Train ride as we recognize the challenges and opportunities provided by Canada’s proclaimed Emancipation Day. The ride will be an incredible journey and experience about the Underground Railroad, the route enslaved Africans used to escape American slave plantations, seeking freedom in Canada and ultimately Emancipation Day on August 1st. The theme of this year’s Freedom Train ride is The Fire Within as we focus on the element of fire and its power to re-kindle, transform and inspire. The train ride will feature a national declaration of Emancipation Day by Senator Wanda Bernard one of the Train Ride’s previous “Conductors” and an advocate for Canada’s national recognition of Emancipation Day. Also featured this year will be performances by Randell Adjei, the first Poet Laureate of Ontario, award-winning composer Andrew Craig, musicians Eddie Martinez, Amani Woods, Phoenix, the Freedom Train Ride Choir, and various pulsating voices from around the country and across the seas. Serena Wills is a native New Yorker and currently resides in the Washington, DC area. She holds a BA in Policy Studies from Syracuse University, an MPA from Virginia Tech and a Master of Arts in Health and Wellness Coaching from the Maryland University of Integrative Health. She’s a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach through the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching and is the owner of Divine Wryte Wellness (her health and wellness coaching practice), she’s also a published author and a poet. She now has three published poetry books, The Awakening, Pieces of Life Volume 2, released December 2019, Crying Tears of Teal released in fall of 2017 and her first poetry book titled, Reconstruction, Pieces of Life, Volume 1 which was released in 2014. She’s also published in numerous anthologies and has written health and wellness articles for various publications. Serena is a mother to her beautiful son, is an advocate for Ovarian Cancer, GYN Cancers and Lyme Disease research and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Recently, Ms. Wills was on our show talking about lyme disease and people who are immunocompromised in the pandemic.
