Dr. Paul Miller is the Principal and CEO of Green Tech High Charter School, a highly successful school for boys in Albany, NY. An expert in urban education, Dr. Miller has specialized in school reform and redesign for over 20 years, counseling school officials and administrators on effective strategies to increase performance among black males and establish a culture of success. He has committed his life to educating and empowering low-income urban youth with the intention to facilitate change and undo the trend of academic underachievement that often plagues young black men from the inner city. The passion did not begin with his professional career, but was implanted in him as a youth growing up in the projects of Rochester, NY. Similar to many of his students, Dr. Miller understands the challenges that often knock young minority men off-course and hinder their ability to reach their full potential. However, he teaches students not to be victims, but to use adversity as fuel to succeed and rise above their circumstances.

Since taking over Green Tech in 2012, Dr. Miller has turned the school into one of the best in New York State. Under his leadership, graduation rates have soared – reaching an impressive 95% with a 100% college acceptance rate for graduates. In addition, students have earned over $25 million in scholarships, compared to only $200,000 before he arrived. Dr. Miller has been recognized by the City of Albany as a Man of Valor, and as one of the top 40 Under 40 African American Leaders by the City of Rochester, among many other accomplishments. He is often invited to speak to students and to offer strategic counsel to school leaders on improving school systems and more effectively engaging students. Dr. Miller has emerged as one of the top and most highly sought after urban education leaders in the nation.

Recently, Dr. Miller was live on our show talking about his article The School to Prison Pipeline.

Jeff Miller and Shawn Fry are both dads who’s mission is to change lives. As a parent of a child with Autism, Jeff has created Potentia workforce to help individuals such as his son find the right job when he is looking. With over 85% of neurodivese individuals being underemployed in the US, Potentia works with to help expand a organization’s neurodiversity programs. At 42, Shawn was diagnosed with autism. He sold his first business business to VC two years ago and helped launch Potentia. During COVID, Shawn and the team at Potentia created the Potentia Health Registry to open schools.

Jeff Miller has spent more than two decades in leadership roles in the human capital industry. He was president of a $350m recruitment firm, Cenergy Partners, which provided over 2,000 engineers and field workers to industries including energy, aerospace, manufacturing and technology. Jeff had full responsibility for day-to-day operations of this international firm, reporting to the board of directors, and successfully completed four acquisitions during his tenure.

Earlier in his career, Jeff was division president for Exxova, an Atlantabased technology consultancy where he built and led the firm’s largest division in providing innovative solutions to the healthcare industry.

Jeff was also a Sr. Vice president for KBR, an $88 EPC where he built and ran the firm’s fastest growing division. He also served as Vice President, Americas for NES, a global recruitment firm, where he built and led an international team responsible for record-setting results. Jeff has launched and led organizations, divisions and teams in the 20 largest markets in North America, as well as in Europe, Asia and Australia.

A native of the Boston area, Jeff remains a loyal Red Sox fan and highly limited former athlete. He lives in the Houston area with his wife Samantha, and son Charlie – an awesomely cool teenager on the autism spectrum.

Shawn Fry, became a successful executive and entrepreneur after being diagnosed with Asperger’s at age 42. He found success in his professional career only after he was afforded the opportunity as the CIO of several hospital systems to exercise a great deal of autonomy in his role.

Shawn’s propensity for detail, hard questions and divergent solutions produced millions in both new revenue opportunity and cost savings for his employer. His innovative approach to the complexity of healthcare data laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial healthcare technology firms centered around analytics, revenue cycle and clinical informatics. Through these ventures, he left corporate America behind, hired nearly 150 employees and created his own “neurodiverse workplace culture”.

Shawn found that by cultivating an environment dependent upon open, honest dialogue, clear communication and vulnerability, the workplace culture was more supportive and accommodating to everyone’s needs. People were happier, more productive and turnover rates were 0% after nearly 15 years. Shawn is a holder of multiple technology patents which he utilized to create dozens of healthcare analytics platforms. He remains a well-respected speaker and author on critical healthcare issues.

Shawn sold his company to private equity in 2019 and has dedicated the rest of his life to embracing neurodiversity and the powers it unlocks through thought leadership, personal security and self esteem in one’s uniqueness.

During our conversation, Jeff and Shawn talked about:

– Some background about Potentia, how they met and how they help the neurodiverse community
– Some of their memories growing up
– If they had any mentors when they were growing up
– Memories of when they first became a father
– How there role as a father changed over the years
– That if the traditions that they learned from their father been passed on to their kids
– If today’s young fathers have it more difficult than when they were young fathers
– A tough moment being a father and why was it hard
– The pandemic’s impact on their role as a father
– The three happiest moments in their life so far
– The greatest thing about being a father
– Their message for fathers

Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly is hosted by V. Sheree Williams, the publisher of Cuisine Noir Magazine and Dr. Vibe.

Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly are in depth conversations with people who have been featured in Cuisine Noir Magazine.

Recently, Andrea Lacy was on Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. Andrea is the CEO of Luv’s Brownies.

Andrea Lacy established Luv’s Brownies in October 1996, first preparing her delicious morsels in her apartment and then moving to a professional kitchen as sales grew. Her story begins while attending San Jose State University, Aundrea struggled with algebra classes. She failed the same math class five times. Her counselor advised her to work with the Disability Resource Center and get tested for a learning disability. She was diagnosed with dyslexia.

But prior to discovering that she had dyslexia — during her first semester at SJSU, as a thank you gift she baked a friend some brownies. At the time she noticed the dough was thick but baked the brownies anyway. She revisited the brownie recipe and realized she transposed some numbers in her ingredients list without knowing she had dyslexia. Aundrea’s belief is some detriments are true blessings in disguise.

Luv’s Brownies come in 14 flavors including rocky road, peanut butter brownie s’more, coconut caramel, and mint chip, and they are sold online and shipped nationwide. The company has been featured in magazines such as Rachel Ray, Essence, and Ebony — and Aundrea has been featured on the cover of Black Enterprise magazine. She is also the author of Brownie Points: Seven Steps to Success for Woman Entrepreneurs from One Who Made It!

Luv’s Brownies®, Home of the Original Heart-Shaped Brownie®, and Luv Bites® (bite-sized heart-shaped brownies) are all registered trademarks of the Luv’s Brownies company. Luv’s Brownies is an LLC.

During our conversation, Ms. Lacy talked about:

– Being diagnosed with dyslexia when she was younger and the family support
– Working at HP for ten years
– The story behind Luv’s Brownies, using SEO to make the business successful and highlights of the journey, selling brownies at the San Francisco 49’ers stadium and the crazy story of getting a food truck to sell brownies, Cuban coffee and ice cream
– Some rosy times and some tough times
– Her smile and her resiliency
– The first ah-ah moment in the Luv’s Brownies journey
– A bit about her book Brownie Points: Seven Steps to Success for Woman Entrepreneurs from One Who Made It!
– The first three years of the business and running the business with her son with the last fifteen years
– Her scholarship fund
– The popular items sold by the food truck
– The thought process behind her launching new items
– Her favorite food personalities
– Making buying from her food truck an experience
– Some of her hopes for 2021
– Some products from the website
– Who is Luv?

Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company.

As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education.

Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy.

Jill Jones is our special guest for this conversation. Ms. Jones is activist, feminist, former collaborator with Paisley Park.

During the February 27, 2021 edition Staggers State Of Things, the topics that the ladies talked about were:

– McConnell says he’d support Trump if he wins 2024 nomination and the Conservative Political Action Conference this past weekend in Orlando, Florida
– Capitol Police chief says extremists have discussed attack on Congress during Biden’s first joint address
– The Power Is Back On In Texas. Now Comes The Recovery, And It Won’t Be Cheap
– Tiger Woods ‘in good spirits’ after follow-up procedures for injuries
– This episode’s cockroach: The Republican Party Of America
