THE DR. VIBE SHOW™ - BLACK CANADA TALKING™ - JACKEE KASANDY - FOUNDER - CEO - BLACK ENTREPRENEURS AND BUSINESSES AND SOCIETY OF CANADA

Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

Recently, Jackee Kasandy – Founder – CEO of the Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society (BEBC) was on Black Canada Talking™.

Ms. Kasandy is the co-Founder of the BEBC. She grew up in Kenya, and spent time in places that didn’t have electricity or water. She moved to Canada and started her business. But because she had a lack of credit history and capital, she couldn’t get loans. She had to max out her credit cards to launch her retail business, and relied on subletting her rented apartment through airbnb just to get by until she finally built her business. It now does more than 500K in revenue. She would be MUCH further ahead if she had access to loans or grants or investment early on, but was considered ‘unfundable’. She helped start this pitch contest so that people like her can get the funding to start people off.

The Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society (BEBC), a non-profit is here to help you. Partner with us as we connect you with community leaders who will meet your needs, as you create community, expand networks and start, maintain or scale up your business.

The BEBC’s brand new Black Pitch Contest is launching nationwide this month—providing a unique pathway to funding for entrepreneurs who otherwise are shut out of business opportunities.

The Black Pitch Contest gives Black entrepreneurs and youth a shot at cash prizes stretching up to $25K (with a possibility of getting up to 100k prize as we continue to fundraise and add partners to our contest). Crucially, this pitch is created to be ‘barrier free’, meaning anyone in the Black community in Canada can apply, no matter their age, gender, or experience level. Many other pitches often require lengthy business plans and months of work for entrants just to successfully apply. However, because most Canadian Black businesses are micro-enterprises, most owners simply don’t have the time to go through a lengthy application process to get started. The Black Pitch Contest, on the other hand, is streamlined and simple. People can apply even if their business idea is at conception stage. All you have to do to enter is fill out a brief application and film a 2-minute youtube video, describing your business idea. That’s all you need to get started. Awards are based on how good your idea is, not on how much time you’ve been able to spend drafting a 60-page business plan, and people are eligible even if they’re very young or if they have no business experience. Winners get the money, no strings attached, along with opportunity for mentorship and coaching and further investment contacts.

THE DR. VIBE SHOW™: DR. ALICIA WATKINS "HOW CAN BLACK MEN AND BLACK WOMEN LOVE EACH OTHER?"

Dr. Alicia Watkins is a full professor of social work and a licensed clinical therapist. She is also the founder of Coaching with Dr. Alicia, LLC, as a certified couples coach focusing on providing evidence-based skills to couples who wish to get married, improve their communication skills, and foster healthy relationships.

As a mother of three children, Dr. Alicia wishes to use her own life experiences related to love, marriage, community building, self-exploration, and commitment to respectful living to inspire couples to become stronger together. She also works as a part time therapist at Alliance Counselling and Coaching, where she helps individuals, couples, and families heal from past issues that hinder current functioning.

Dr. Alicia has been a licensed therapist for 17 years and considers this work to be her lifelong passion. As a full-time professor of social work at the University of St. Francis, Dr. Alicia enjoys training adult learners on techniques to become professional social workers. She teaches courses on cultural competency, advanced research, field education, and social work practice. Dr. Alicia obtained her master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago in 2000 and earned her doctoral degree in social work from Florida State University in 2008. She has published 10 professional articles and has presented at over 20 professional social work conferences.

On recent show, our guest was David Griffiths, MBA, PMP, CEO and Founder, Brothers who Care.

The glue, the advisor, the coach, the connector, the Get It Done Guy, the people developer, the care leader, and the mental health advocate. Yes, David Griffiths is a man who holds numerous titles, which come from his many years of service to the community and in corporate operating in spaces where technology and business intersect. David strategically applies his: energy, tenacity and authenticity to help people and organizations reach their full potential. He is known for creating environments where people strive, share their gifts to the world and make phenomenal transformations.

As Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Brothers Who Care (BwC), David has harnessed the power of collective philanthropy through partnership and collaboration. Based in Toronto, Brothers Who Care is a network of 500+ Black Men and Allies who have tailored their work to focus on initiatives that significantly impact the Black community. BwC use stories, images and videos to change the social, psychological and economical health of BIPOC communities. The work at BwC focus on Collective Philanthropy; Skills & Education; Financial Security and; Mental Health & Well-being.

Born in Manchester, Jamaica and immigrated to Canada at the age of 14. His parents and extended family have always instilled and reinforced the importance of giving back and sharing with the community at a very young age. Those beliefs and values taught to David as a youth have continuously been a moral compass for him in his life journey.

David spent the first 2 years of his professional career working as a Process Engineer in North Carolina. From 2002 -2010, David held positions as: a Senior Project Manager, a Senior Manager, and Associate Director at the technology firm, Symcor. During these 8 years, he volunteered at various organizations in Toronto, engaging in large scale action and leadership to change the state of the city and the negative impact it was having on the youth and their communities. One of these most notable changes happened with the Jamaican Canadian Association where David, first as the Youth Chair and subsequently the association’s President, created a legacy scholarship where youth have an opportunity to earn and receive funding for post secondary education, an initiative that still happens to this day.

David evokes transformation. David has designed creative and innovative solutions to help clients in the public and private sector lead digital and business transformation initiatives to solve some of the world’s most complex problems such as financial security, crime, DEI and mental health. In 2010, David joined IBM as a Strategy & Transformation Managing Consultant. In 2016, he moved into a Senior Managing Consultant role, and in 2021, he became Associate Partner, Enterprise Strategy & Financial Services. He has far reaching experience in aligning Business and IT objectives to generate growth, and innovation. His strength lies in: developing implementation plan, business case, vision and strategic execution of global operating models, including change and organizational design.

He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Windsor, as well as an MBA in Strategic Management & International Business from Schulich School of Business (York University).

David has a passion for people that cannot be denied; he enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two children, and always finds time to give back to his community. Overall, David Griffiths is a man with a plan, and the courage and tenacity to execute it.

THE DR. VIBE SHOW™: STATE OF THINGS WITH AISHA, JILL & LALA – DECEMBER 17, 2022

Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company.

As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education.

Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy.

Ms. Jones is an activist, feminist, and a former collaborator with Paisley Park.

THE DR. VIBE SHOW™: BLACK CANADA TALKING - STACY "DESTINY" SAVARY

Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

Recently, Stacy “Destiny” Savary was on Black Canada Talking™ talking about her journey and her book The Perfect Storm: Navigating the Storms of Life in Messy Waters.

For over 21 years, Stacy has been a noteworthy leader within her community, providing social support and outreach, especially within the Caribbean community. From working at homeless shelters, grass-root organizations, to coordinating children camps, mentoring programs and outreach events for at-risk youth in disenfranchised areas in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Stacy has always had a passion for working with marginalized groups, specifically women and youth. While she has had a passion to help others, she also faced numerous health challenges that required her to pause and to seek her own healing. She has been diagnosed with Endometriosis; a disorder where the tissue that makes up the uterine lining (the lining of the womb) grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis is usually found in the lower abdomen, or pelvis, but can appear anywhere in the body. Despite her challenges, she vowed to maintain a positive, balanced and fulfilling outlook on life. Through all her trauma, struggles in dealing with an incurable disease, and disability, Stacy managed to share her life’s journey through this book, in hopes to inspire and empower others.

They also provide professionally facilitated online parenting classes and anger management courses to parents looking to navigate the challenges of parenting during a time of separation or to gain better control over their emotions. Their programs are private and conducted one-on-one online. For that reason, Renew’s content is tailored to meet your specific needs and address your concerns. Because sessions are private, their scheduling is flexible so facilitation times can work around their client’s professional and personal commitments. All programs come with a certificate of completion and letter outlining topics discussed to better support those with court orders.

Owned and operated by a caring team of professionals in the legal and social services fields, Renew was created for families looking for natural in-home and community environments. Their highly trained Supervised Access Facilitators seamlessly fit into the natural routines of family life, and are a supportive presence during walks, trips to the local park or pool, or quiet family time within the home.

Regardless of the access site, Renew’s aim is to ensure that parents continue to have access to their child(ren) and costs should not be a barrier. Renew’s services are available to families throughout the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa and Kingston.

Techenia Archer is a registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE, B.ECS) and the Renew Supervision’s lead parenting course facilitator. Renew Supervision Services facilitates a safe environment for children and families who require supervised access visits, parenting courses and reunification therapy.

Techenia has over ten years of experience working with children and families. Techenia uses her education and lived experience to help children and families across Ontario.

Derek Woodruff is the Co-Founder of Renew Supervision Services, a company which facilitates a safe environment for children and families who require supervised access visits, parenting courses and reunification therapy. Derek has over twenty years of experience supporting local and marginalized communities in Scarborough and British Columbia.

Derek has developed programs that support the family unit for those incarcerated, those experiencing homelessness, or those who have recently arrived as immigrants to Canada. His goal of supporting the mental health and well-being of individuals and families is a driving force behind the programs and services Renew Supervision Services offers.

Serena is also a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) through the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches, an Associate Certified Coach through International Coach Federation and is the owner of Divine Wryte Wellness (her health and wellness coaching practice). Overall she’s a self-published author, poet, health and wellness coach, a publishing coach and a workplace wellness innovator.

Serena has three poetry books, The Awakening, Pieces of Life Volume 2 released December 2019, Crying Tears of Teal released in fall of 2017 and her first poetry book titled, Reconstruction, Pieces of Life, Volume 1 which was released in 2014 and is in several anthologies. She’s also a health and wellness writer for blogs and other online and print publications. She designs and facilitates workshops on self-publishing to assist aspiring writers and published authors and on health and wellness topics to assist people with stress reduction and how to realistically obtain optimal health.

She’s a mother to her beautiful son and is an advocate for Ovarian Cancer, GYN Cancers and Lyme Disease research and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The students were given the leadership award on April 30th , one of our facilitators also received the Mentorship Award – Nichola Watson. Avi picked up the award for Victoria Sexual Assault Clinic. The group has been invited to visit the British Columbia legislature this week.

The Black Youth Empowerment (BYE) group consists of six high school students who in winter 2020 began reviewing program content on bystander intervention from the Project Respect program. The focus of the group is to ensure that the information about bystander intervention is culturally relevant. The primary question they are answering is, “How does the content resonate with the group’s Black identities and experiences?”

During our conversation, the members of Black Youth Empowerment talked about:

– Process leading up to the Safer-Braver Spaces in Schools workshop
– Scenarios that are unproductive between students and teachers

Dr. Joel Bratton Jr. is native of Baltimore, the CEO and Founder of Project Hope Educational Consultants and a fierce champion for underserved and vulnerable populations. Dr. Bratton’s research focuses on Black Male Achievement and Community Engagement in P-20 and Underserved Black Male Success in Community College and the Success of Black Male Mentoring Programs at Community Colleges and Universities. In addition to his research, Dr. Bratton has authored and contributed to several books and published peer reviewed articles. While teaching on the collegiate level, Dr. Bratton served as an education reviewer for Education and Urban Society (EUS) to evaluate peer review articles for publication. Dr. Bratton’s highly anticipated memoir, Where I Started is Not Where I Will Finish is an engaging exploration of life’s journeys and the moments that define us.

Dr. Bratton has worked in public education for over 25 years with Baltimore City Public School System in several capacities. In addition, Dr. Bratton has participated in several Black male initiatives, including Baltimore’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative (MBK-Baltimore) and programs focusing on fatherhood.

Dr. Bratton received a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from West Virginia State College (now University), and a Master of Science in Human Service Administration with a concentration in Children and Family Counseling from Coppin State University. He earned his doctoral degree in Community College Leadership from Morgan State University. Dr. Bratton enjoys serving his community with his organization, Project Hope Educational Consultants and his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

Dr. Bratton is involved on several boards, Black Girls Dive and the National Philharmonic Orchestra and a participate in the Board Pipeline Leadership Development Training Program.

Dr. Bratton enjoys family time, reading, riding his bicycle attending sporting events, cooking and the outdoors.

Our guest on the April 3, 2022 episode of Black Canada Talking™ was Kelvin Nyeusi-Mawazo (pronounced “Nigh – ooo – see” – “Ma – wah – zo”). Kelvin is an author, illustrator, and owner of the publishing company named Black Sun Comics.

They create Afrofuturist comics and graphic novels. Their books mix science, technology, magic & monsters with the timeless sophistication of black & white fine art.

Set in an alternate universe on a planet named Alkebulan, Black Sun: The Longest Night is a graphic novel series that follows a group of unlikely heroes who must band together to reclaim their world from a ruthless, invading alien armada.

Born and raised in Toronto (GTA), Canada, Kelvin uses the skills he’s acquired as a Photographer, Front-end Web Developer, and College Instructor to digitally illustrate his books and teach others how to do the same via his YouTube channel.

He is a self-proclaimed nerd, lover of science fiction, lo-fi instrumental Hip Hop, post-apocalyptic movies, and retro gaming.

THE DR. VIBE SHOW™: REVENGE OF THE BLACK BEST FRIEND

Revenge of the Black Best Friend is a brand new CBC Gem original comedy series from award-winning playwright, host, producer, and CBC personality Amanda Parris, puts a spotlight – and surreal twist – on the familiar tropes, stereotypes and typecasting that’s been forced on Black actors.

The entire six-part series debuted on the free CBC Gem streaming service on Thursday, March 31, 2022.

It also had its international premiere as an official selection in the Short Form competition at the prestigious Cannes International Series Festival (Canneseries) April 1-6, 2022.

From dismissed divas to sidelined superheroes, the series follows Dr. Toni Shakur (played by The Porter’s Oluniké Adeliyi), a self-help guru whose mission is to cancel the entertainment industry’s reliance on token Black characters…that is before she gets cancelled herself. This highly irreverent series is partially inspired by Robert Townsend’s iconic ‘80s spoof Hollywood Shuffle, and is in the spirit of contemporary offerings like Atlanta, Random Acts of Flyness and Sorry to Bother You.

Revenge of the Black Best Friend is directed by Thyrone Tommy, Ian Keteku and Jerome Kruin. Motion (Co-Executive Producer, Writer) and Julian De Zotti (Executive Producer) are also part of the production team. It stars Oluniké Adeliyi, Cara Ricketts, Araya Mengesha, Dwain Murphy, Ashton James, Julian De Zotti and Jenny Young with special appearances from Andrea Lewis, Tyrone Edwards and Mark Strong.

THE DR. VIBE SHOW - LILLIE JOHNSON'S 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - MARCH 16 - 2022 - AUDIO - EDIT - 128 kbps

On March 16, 2022, Dr. Vibe along with Nicole Waldron hosted Ms. Lillie Johnson’s Birthday Celebration!!

Ms. Johnson is the founder of the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario.

Lillie Johnson was born the third of nine children and the first daughter to her parents. In 1960, she emigrated from her homeland of Jamaica to Canada. Upon moving to Canada, she made herself a promise to return to her homeland someday with the plan to provide health care services to those who could not afford it. At her time of arrival to Toronto Lillie, already a trained nurse, midwife and teacher with working experience from England, Scotland and Jamaica went on to serve as the first Black Director of Public Health in Ontario.

Lillie taught a post-diploma certificate course in Child and Maternal Health at Humber College. She was also a consultant for the Ministry of Health and then became Director of Nursing Services at Leeds Granville and Lanark Health unit (Eastern Ontario).

In 1981, she founded the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario, along with a group of other professionals. Lillie remains an active member and was instrumental in advocating for the inclusion of Sickle Cell Disease to newborn screening in Ontario in 2006.

Lillie is the recipient of several awards including the Bloomberg Award from the Bloomberg School of Nursing at U. of T., the 2009 Toronto Public Health Champion Award and the province of Ontario’s highest honour, the Order of Ontario in 2010. In 1989 she fulfilled her promise and returned back to Jamaica to volunteer for CUSO International.

In September 2014, Lillie was presented with the Legacy Award for her lifelong, extraordinary commitment to advancing the health and well-being of the Black community at the Inaugural Black Health Alliance Awards.

The year 2015 was an action packed one for Lillie who fulfilled another one of her lifelong dreams of having her first book published. Her memoir, “My Dream” was published in the year she celebrated her 93rd birthday. This same year, Lillie was a torch bearer for the Pan Am Games held in Toronto and she also received the Viola Desmond Award from Ryerson University.

In 2016, Lillie was the recipient of the Long-Term Care Lifetime Achievement Award and then received in 2017 the Ontario Senior Achievement Award along with fourteen other volunteers from our Ontario community for their tireless work.

Lillie remains one of the most passionate, committed health advocates and humanitarians.

Robb Kelly, PhD is a renowned addiction consultant who believes in treating the problem of addiction, not the symptoms. He has worked for many years helping addicts and alcoholics to recover their lives from the disease of addiction. Based on his own experiences working with addicts and alcoholics over the last 20 years, a PhD in Psychology from Oxford University and as a recovered alcoholic himself – he is a triple threat against the disease of addiction. Dr. Kelly was the CEO of a thriving telecommunications company when the walls came crashing down on him due to alcoholism. He ended up homeless and broken on the streets of Manchester, England until he found the courage to save himself.

He has lectured on the subject of addiction at many high-profile universities, national conferences, public schools, churches, business organizations and hospitals, and is recognized as a leading authority on addiction recovery methods that are changing lives all around the world. Dr. Kelly is currently the CEO of the Robb Kelly Recovery Group, an addiction recovery coaching company he created based on extensive research and behaviour studies that he conducted over the last 20 years. Dr. Kelly’s methods may seem unconventional leading some people to refer to him as “The Gordon Ramsay of the Addiction World” because of his direct, no-nonsense, and candid approach to treating addiction. Dr. Kelly works to “make the road of recovery less of a mystery tour.”

A sought-after recovery expert, Dr. Kelly has appeared on such shows as The Doctors, Eye Opener, Good Morning Texas, and Kens5 morning news. A sample of radio and print interviews include The Jim Bohannon Show, Miracles in Recovery, and USA Today. Dr. Kelly hosted Sober Celebs show on KLIF radio in Dallas, and currently hosts the Recovery Channel podcast featuring special guest discussing a variety of mental health issues. Instructor/speaker for Let’s Get Back to 98% Recovery DVD’s used in prisons and recovery treatment centers throughout the US. Dr. Kelly shares his personal highs and lows as he struggled and overcame crippling alcoholism in the November 2019 release of the book Daddy, Daddy Please Stop Drinking.

Hungry Eyes also expanded its focus to develop content for mobile users as well. As a company with its own distinct mission plan, Hungry Eyes seeks to inspire and entertain!

The History Channel Canada and Hungry Eyes Media Group announce the groundbreaking four-part docuseries, BLK: An Origin Story, premiering Saturday, February 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The limited series, consisting of four 60-minute episodes, reveals the deep historic impact of Black presence in Canada. Executive produced by Jen Holness and Sudz Sutherland, BLK: An Origin Story is helmed by Hungry Eyes’ award-winning production team, who takes viewers on a nationwide journey through time to discover the untold story of Black people in Canada and their legacy, which dates back to 1608.

BLK: An Origin Story is steeped in riveting, enduring, and multi-faceted historical Black Canadian narratives. Each episode transports viewers to a different Canadian location and provides chronologically significant insights into the consequences of Black presence in the areas. Featured outposts include Nova Scotia, Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec. The series also highlights the legacy of Black contributions to the larger story of Canada itself, dating back to when explorer Mathieu de Costa first set foot on shore, more than 400 years ago. BLK: An Origin Story acts as an immersive and informative chapter of Black Canadian history, elevating remarkable Black Canadians previously unacknowledged in mainstream social, academic, and cultural circles, normalizing their unique stories as a matter of general record.

“As Canadian creatives, BLK: An Origin Story embodies our professional mission to champion fresh, and authentic perspectives toward storytelling. We crossed the country and spoke, listened, and learned. The result is four hours of programming that resets the understanding of Black history in Canada. It was important for us to deliver the series as a comprehensive, multi-layered, multi-disciplinary, and essential Canadian journey. We are grateful to the stalwarts, knowledge keepers, and storytellers from Black Canadian communities and locations from Vancouver to Halifax, with Owen Sound, Amherstburg, Windsor, and Montreal as points in between. They’ve shared the immense generational experiences and events documented in each episode. We view history, and Black contribution to Canadian history as a defining part of Canada’s overall identity, from both an inward and outward gaze,” said Jennifer Holness, Executive Producer, Hungry Eyes Media Group.

“It is a crucial time in our country’s history to reflect on and share the important Black narratives that influenced our nation,” said Lisa Godfrey, Senior Vice President of Original Content and Corus Studios. “We are proud to partner with the talented storytellers at Hungry Eyes Media who have developed this must-see and influential docu-series.”

“Black people are entitled to know how they have taken up space in Canada, going back to the beginning of how the country’s identity has been shaped. The historic learnings that we share in this documentary series are vitally important for our communities since we cannot move forward without acknowledging our tremendous contributions to Canada’s past,” said Sudz Sutherland. “In shedding these lights, the series contributes to the larger societal conversation toward dismantling systemic racism.”

BLK: An Origin Story elevates the unsung heroes who substantially contributed to Canada’s nation-building and to Black Canadian history. The series shines a spotlight on the origins of diverse and deeply entrenched Black Canadian experiences, which range from being transported, escaped, or freely traveled within Canada. Part history book, part geography lesson, each of the four episodes leverages compelling footage, art, locations, archival materials, and interviews from some of the country’s best known and under-known experts of Black Canadian lore, facts, and pedagogy. The list of authors, academics, musicians, historians, community leaders, activists, and elders include George Elliot Clarke, Lawrence Hill, Charmaine Nelson, El Jones, May Q Wong, and Stephanie Allen, among others.

Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

On the January 23, 2022 edition of Black Canada Talking™, our guest was Dr. Lisa Gunderson.

Known as Dr. Lisa or DrG in her communities, Lisa is an award-winning community leader, psychologist and educator. She founded and operates One Love Consulting (OLC) which provides services to ministries, businesses, educational institutions, private/public organizations in Canada and the United States focusing on racial equity, systemic racism, anti-Black and anti-racism. A BC registered clinical counselor and an inactive licensed psychologist in California, she also provides clinical peer consults for persons working with Indigenous, Black and other racialized clients. She was elected in August 2021 to serve as VP-English for the Federal Green Party and is the first IBPoC person to hold the seat.

Known as a bridger in her communities, she is very active in African-Canadian communities. Two current areas she is working with Black Youth Empowerment (BYE), an amazing group of ACB youth, on a Bystander Intervention Program for Black Youth and also working with ACB men in CSC. A former tenured US professor, she has taught in numerous universities and colleges (undergraduate and graduate) in Canada, provided key subject matter expertise to the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General during the development and implementation of provincial training on fair and impartial policing. Her two
most recent pieces were You Can’t Be Switzerland as part of an upcoming special magazine edition called Intersections written by people who are currently incarcerated and a chapter on Black Canadians for Embracing Cultural Responsivity and Social Justice.

She was part of the advisory board regarding A former liaison for the African Heritage Association of Vancouver Island to the Greater Victoria Police Diversity Advisory Committee, a member of the Planning, Transportation, and Economic Development Advisory Committee in Saanich and board member of the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Center Society.

DrG lives in Victoria/Saanich, BC with her two sons and partner of 25 years. She is a first generation African-American and Canadian immigrant of Jamaican heritage. She loves movies, baking, anything basketball related, traveling, reading, and playing dominoes with family and friends.

Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

Our guests on the February 6, 2022 episode of Black Canada Talking™ our guest was Richard Miller of Keep6ix.

They will be talking about Keep6ix Gangs 4 Tuition program and accountability in regards to the money that governments gives to Black organizations and where does it go.

Keep6ix is a not-for-profit Toronto based organization, serving the Greater Toronto Area, that was founded in 2017 to make a meaningful difference in the lives of at risk youth from racialized communities who have been impacted by the criminal justice system.

Keep6ix offers various programs and services to help youth avoid going down a disempowering path towards incarceration. We also support and advocate for those who are currently incarcerated and provide post-release support so that they can overcome barriers and begin to pasitively re-build their lives within the community.

Keep6ix’s vision is to …

– Support criminalized and racialized communities to attain positivity and break the odds.
– Overcome systemic barriers to support at risk youth and those criminalized by the justice system.

Keep6ix’s mission is to …

– Provide holistic and integrated capacity-building programs to youth involved in the justice system.
– Prevent youth from going down a disempowering path by providing one-on-one mentoring, career conselling and employment skills training.
– Promote healthy self-esteem in youth through core life skills counselling to help build on their communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.

Richard Miller is the Founder of Keep6ix and a driven community leader, dedicated to assisting underserved youth. After experiencing and witnessing misrepresentation, racism, corruption, and injustices experienced by black youth and minorities, Richard decided to establish Keep6ix. It is his passion to bring healing to individuals who have been through traumatic experiences, by ensuring resources and programming are available to prevent incarceration. Richard is an experienced and savvy entrepreneur, who believes in training and developing the next generation of young professionals. He believes that with a second chance, and the right opportunities present, our young people can thrive and become successful.

During our conversation, Richard talked about:

– The Keep6ix Gangster Tuition program & the opportunities it provides
– An unfortunate story about abuse at a detention centre
– His relationship with “people in power”
