Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company.

As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

Our guest on the February 21, 2021 episode of Black Canada Talking™ was Leonard Paris.

After growing up in rural Nova Scotia, Leonard Albert Paris spent forty-seven years in law enforcement, during which he often had to help people who were victimized, harassed, and treated unfairly because of their race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. This experience led him to take several courses at the University of Toronto on equity issues, diversity, inclusion, and race relations. Now retired, Leonard lives in Mississauga, Ontario, where he enjoys photography and being out in nature. Jim Crow Also Lived here is his first book.

Many people believe that racism and discrimination against those of African descent was primarily an American experience. However, this book dispels that myth by recounting Leonard Albert Paris’s first eighteen years (1948–1966), growing up as a Black youth in rural Nova Scotia, Canada, a province that was at the time, home to about 36 percent of Canada’s Black population.

Structural racism, community isolation, and generational poverty affected every aspect of his life, creating challenges and misery for him, his family, and the entire Black community—an experience that continues to affect him emotionally many decades later. While not as extreme as it was during the author’s formative years, racism and its effects continue into the present. Leonard wrote Jim Crow Also Lived Here in part to create awareness of this problem and also to inspire change.

Recently, Mr. Paris was on Black Canada Talking™ talked about Black Canada Talking™ talking about Jim Crow Also Lived Here.

During our conversation, Mr. Paris talked about:

– The importance of Black Canadians doing their family tree
– Growing up in Nova Scotia, facing racism and the lack of Black Canadian history education
– What he loved about his parents
– Being involved in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
– Memories of the day he retired
– The story behind the book
– What makes Black Nova Scotians so special
– Memories of finishing the book and receiving the final edited copy of the book
– An interesting story about how he got the publisher for his book
– The denial and disbelief when it comes to Black Canadian history
– His message for non-melanated and Black Canadians

Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

During the January 17, 2021 edition of Black Canada Talking™, the guests were: Clovis and Sherron Grant.

Clovis and Sherron Grant are parents of 2 children, ages 26 & 24 years, one of whom has special needs. Sherron is a school principal in the Toronto District School Board and Clovis is the CEO of 360°kids, an organization serving homeless youth in York Region.

They founded the Black Parent Support Group in November 2020. The group was developed to support the unique needs of parents/ caregivers who are Black and raising a child with special needs. The child can be of any age and of any disability. The group’s intent is to provide a safe space for families to network, build connections, problem-solve and to reduce their isolation. The group is free to join and meets monthly, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. For more information, contact via email or Facebook

Support, isolation, funding, resources, friends….These are the things that many families who care for someone with special needs think and worry about. For many of these families, their circle of support is quite small. This is often the case for racialized communities who have a child with special needs. The Black Parents of Children and Adults with a Disability Support Group (BPSG) was created to provide a safe space for families of African descent to come together to meet and connect, share resources, expertise and needs, inspire and support one another through our unique and often challenging and isolating journey of raising Black children or supporting a sibling, of any age, with a disability. It is a volunteer run group that meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. via Zoom. There will be guest speakers, resource sharing, support and mentorship opportunities for attendees. For more details or to register, please contact them via email. You can also find them on Facebook .

During our conversation, the Grants talked about:

– Some of their background and their giving and sharing spirit
– What is autism
– Handling their son’s (Isiah) autism over the years
– The support that they were getting before they started their support group
– The story behind the Black Parent Support Group, its growth and memories of the first meeting
– Some of the areas that parents of the group need help with
– The impact that the pandemic has had on this community
– The future vision for the group
– Their message for the African community in regards to autism

His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education.

Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats’ Women’s Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy.
